The Story of Chocolate 1. Chocolate is originally called Theobroma Cocoa. 2. It was the Mayans who first created a beverage from crushed cocoa beans which was enjoyed by royalty and in sacred ceremonies. 3. The Aztecs use cocoa beans as currency because it was so highly valued. For example 10 cocoa beans could get you a rabbit, 50 beans would allow you to get a mule. 4. Hernandez Cortez visited the Aztecs from Spain and was looked upon as a God, because of that they greeted him with the chocolate beverage. He then wrote to the King of Spain that one drink will allow you to walk a whole day without nourishment. He then took the beans to Spain and started to make a new version of his own. 5. Switzerland was the first country to ever create milk chocolate; they used dried milk in order to create this sweet snack. 6. The cocoa tree is strictly a tropical plant thriving only is rainy climates. The cocoa tree essentially grow is areas of the world which are 20 degrees north or south of the equator. 7. After the beans are dried between the span of 5-7 days they are then shipped to cocoa manufacture worldwide. 8. Cocoa farmers actually don’t paid enough. Fair Trade chocolate traders ensure that the farmers get about $150/MT (per Metric Ton) which rises to $350/MT if it is organic. 9. The eye-catching blue, green, white and black FAIRTRADE Mark began being used by FLO International in 2002. The symbol has different interpretations; as some say it’s a parrot, others a green leaf, some see the black swirl at the centre as a road leading to a brighter future. The most common interpretation is to imagine the sky as blue, the green as grass, and the black dot and swirl at the centre as a person holding one arm aloft.
