The State of Food Security in Thailand

On the past couple of years, there is a noticeable phenomenon that we can’t afford to ignore. It is the food security. Food security accesses to adequate and sustainable food supplies in every country, and it has become a hot button across society. Thailand is a small country in Asia, and the major plants in this country are rice, corn, soybeans and cassava; on the other side, fishes, pork and beef are also important during the daily life when people are getting the protein food. There are some factors determine the current status for food security of Thailand which may let the poor food security happen. For example, the production of food supply in Thailand affects the development of economy; the household level becomes a big problem between city and rural areas; and the natural disaster such as climate change and the rising of production cost lead to the high price of food. On the other hand, Thailand makes a policy about agricultural input which it in order to improve the food security. Everybody knows the major food in Asia is rice, and Thailand is also produce a lot of rice to maintain people’s daily life. Then, the production of food supply in Thailand affects the development of economy. “In 2007, Thailand exported agricultural and food products to international market at a value of 612.87 trillion baht (17.76 trillion US$) and imported those from the international market to the domestic at the value of 181.41 trillion baht (5.26 trillion US$).” (Kasetsart). From this sentence, we can find that the production of food affect and develop the economy of Thailand. It means Thailand has made the steady progress in economic development and food production since 2005.
