The Spinner by Paul Peel She looks at her spindle exhaustingly, her posture laidback on the wall as if she has no energy. Her features are glowing, in contrast to the bags underneath her eyes and the shadow cast upon her face. Her pale teal skirt with patches of missing pigment lays lifeless against her legs. There are visible tares under the right sleeve of her dingy navy shirt. She wears no shoes and her feet seem to be dirty, despite those facts, she does wear a gold or metal ring on her middle finger. There are onions, pots and pans on the bottom left of the women, a vase that is placed closed to her seems to be upside down and the bowl next to the vase has an unfinished burnt sienna line on it. In the background the wall is covered in decretive carvings, the drapery is also intricate with decorative designs in rich silk fabric. The baby also in the background, is immersed in the sea of white blanket wearing an embroidered hat and expensive looking clothes different from what the women is wearing. Over all the painting is remarkably well done. The Spinner is warm in color as well in expression. Warm earth tones dominate this painting, ranging from the dark umber and burnt sienna of the walls, to pale yellow flesh tint, the surface of the wood is splashed with yellow ochre and burnt sienna which allows the figure in the green hue to be more prominent. Peel was a French academic painter that is why the brushstrokes are nearly invisible and painting has a smooth surface, which creates a highly finished look. There are some brushstrokes that are a little more visible to the eye such as the yarn and the baby’s bed. Thick paint has been applied with rough brushstrokes creating an interesting dynamic texture. When looked at the painting directly, some might see blurry finger prints on the white blanket between the women’s right arm and baby right. The painting is
