Zakaria Talha Naciri Final Paper Tuesday, March 10th, 2011 Introduction The greatest successes of the world literature were often done in the Epic style, in a world where heroes fight against each other for glory or defeat. This kind of story was the one that orators and minstrels would recount to a group of young boys and which would promote values and educated them in the right way. The just and the rightful is always winning and the bad guys get imprisoned or killed by the end of the day. My passion for this kind of stories since childhood has pushed me to compared two texts belonging to this style. The first one is the Iliad, a story with Greeks heroes fighting against each other to death and where human lives were thrown away like dust. The Iliad is a story that I already read when I was young and that I had the pleasure to see on cinema a few years ago. The second text is “The Song of Roland” or “Les Chansons de Roland”. It is a text that I had already heard of but that I never tried to read because it appeared to me as less interesting as other stories. After rereading the two stories in order to have a clear view of the two texts and the possible points that I could explore, I decided to choose three themes that will be discussed in a deeper way. The first one is X. The second one is the thematic of the conflict which is a classic reoccurrence in the Epic style. The third one is the emotion that are transmitted by the author to the reader. The Song of Roland The Song of Roland is a poem that have been written in 1100 and which retraces the end of the life of Rolland. Its author is not well known as we have very few information on his subject. “The author of the Song of Roland, which was composed aroung the year 1100, was a well educated cleric who was familiar with the epic tradition.” (Bellamy 1987) It becomes quickly and extremely famous in
