The cultural factors: People play sports that suit them and their environment. Tradition plays a major part in physical sport and games in the UK. The Highland games in Scotland continue to be an important community festival. From tossing the caber in Scotland to the cheese rolling in Gloucestershire, people want to participate because they share familiar features; such as being a tradition, being unique to the area, a social occasion and maybe a desire to escape from modern day living. This also includes team sports such as football or rugby. Public schools played an important part in organising sports and games in the 1800/1900. The schools had the money to build the facilities and employ coaches. There were a lot of fixtures between schools and team sports were seen to be character building. Today qualities such as leadership and self control are recognised from participation in team sports from all social statuses and class. And this leads to the factor of money. If you have to work then your free time is limited. If you are wealthy you have the funds to participate in more expensive sports. Another cultural factor that effects participation is the social group of race. Some ethnic groups have a particular interest in some specific sports. British Indians tend to enjoy cricket as it is the sport of India. This cultural influence encourages participation. However some sports are not tolerant of all races participating in team sports as racist attitudes still make participation uncomfortable for some sportspeople, so they may quit.
