Hala Fahim Ms. Fatima English 20th February, 2014 The Sniper and the Cranes The Sniper is a short story, written by the author Liam O’Flaherty, set in Dublin, Ireland, in the 1920s, during a time of bitter civil war. The Cranes is also a short story, written by the author Hwang Sunwon, took place in the early 1950s in Korea. Although both stories talked about Civil war yet, there are many differences and similarities between the two. . Both are soldiers, brave, young, kindhearted, well trained, and loyal to their country. They also were caught in a situation. The Sniper is similar to the Cranes because they were in a conflict where they faced someone they love .Both stood up. Both solved the situation at the end of the story. The Sniper is a tragic story, but the Cranes is a happy ending story. The Sniper is set in Ireland. Unlike the Sniper, The Cranes was set in Korea. In the Sniper the man was fighting for Ireland. On the other hand, in the Cranes Songsam was fighting for the Southside of Korea with the U.S. and U.N forces. In the Sniper, the man killed his brother without noticing, but in the Cranes, Songsam set his best friend free. In the sniper the man was forced to kill his enemies, but in the Cranes he had the choice either to kill his friend or set him free. \ After I read both stories, I realized that although both stories were about Civil war yet, there are many differences and similarities. I liked the Sniper more because it is more interesting, surprising, and I did not expect the ending will be tragic. I liked the Cranes too because at the end he sets his friend free and the story ends with a happy
