1. Identify the type of narrator and its point of view. First person narrator, the point of view is Lucy’s. 2. Characterize Lucy. Lucy is a teenage girl, and she is an over thinker. Lucy is 2nd best grade wise at her school, and she is very proud of that, even though she does not seem like she wants to be proud of her own achievements, since her best friend Bethan is one of the ‘cool kids’ at school, and she looks up to her. Lucy seems confused over who she is, and is lingering between wanting to be good, but wanting to be Bethans friend. She is an overachiever, and artistic. She is scared of rejecting Bethan as a friend, and she mentions smoking against her mums wishes, and also wearing blue eyeliner because Bethan told her to. 3. Talk about how the story is told (time aspect) and the setting. The setting is in the schools greenhouse where detention is held, is warm and smells of dirt, there are a few other students in there as well, outside there is a playground, and most of the time, Bethan is lingering in the background talking to some older boys. Lucy spends most of the time drawing, and looking out the window. Detention is an hour long, and the story is chronology, with minor flashbacks. 4. Identify the theme The theme is growing up, and how you must find out who you are in the world, not just what others wants you to be. 5. Are there symbols? What do they represent? The biggest symbol in the story is the drawing of the heart that Lucy is making, the first one is a bit rubbish, and she draws a new one, with soft lines, and she mentions herself, that is looks so real that blood might actually flow through it. But when detention is over, she shows it to the teacher, and gets him to throw it out. This is a symbol of how she goes from a softer girl, doing what the school and her mum thinks she should do, to surrendering herself to Bethans way, and the
