Lucy: Lucy is a girl who is doing 9 O-levels, at a secondary school and she is one of the best students on the school. Lucy's mother says that Lucy isn’t aloud to wear makeup, but Lucy wears makeup with her friend Bethan. Everyday on the way home from school, Lucy removes her makeup so her mum doesn’t see that she wears it. Lucy sees Bethan as one of the cool girls on the school, and Lucy would rather be the bully instead of being the bullied. Lucy is doing a lot of bad stuff such as, smoking, bullying other pupils, wearing makeup and leaving from lessons. All these things she has done, her mother doesn’t know about. It’s very hard for Lucy to keep it a secret from her mum. We can also tell that the difference of the background of Lucy and Bethan, is that Lucy is the one from the family that is a bit more upper-class than Bethan. Lucy needs to find a balance between being good in school, and then being a bit more free. Bethan: Bethan judges people although she might not know the full length of what she is judging them on - e.g. when Bethan says that “people from Cardiff will never allowed to work in London”( p. 34, l. 7) which means that Bethan believes that if you come from Cardiff you have no future in London. Bethan is a person who says what other people have to do. She says that Lucy has to hit Penny. Lucy thinks that Bethan wanted her to hit Penny so that Lucy would only have BEthan for a friend. It shows that Bethan is insecure and needs her friend to be dependent on her.It also seems like she needs Lucy’s recognition. From what Lucy’s mother says it seems that Bethan’s family has a lower social status than Lucy’s and that Bethan’s mother probably does not take too much care of her children. That could explain why Bethan is “the hardest girl in the year” (p.34, l. 38). On the other hand, Lucy’s mother might just say that to make Lucy avoid Bethan
