In contrast to Cindy’s new found self esteem, her mother seemed to uphold a strong lack of confidence in her daughter and in herself as well. By the same token, in the second article “The Thrill of Victory … The Agony of Parents”, the author presents the opposition through her mother. Jennifer Schwind’s mother appeared as an embarrassment to her publicly and emotionally. “In a voice so screeching that it rivaled fingernails on a blackboard, she told him that he was a disgraceful coach and that he should be ashamed of himself” (Pawlak 3). Grandma Lynn is one of the more vibrant, vain and misunderstood characters within the novel, like her Daughter she portrays an air of selfishness (Relating back to her daughter leaving the family in a time of crisis) however she takes the role of the level-headed peacekeeper throughout her appearances in the Novel, from her arrival before Susie’s funeral to her departure. We also notice how she is a hardened person, unlike the rest of the family. Sebold represents her as a vain and self-conscious character, an alcoholic and above all she has a straight forward attitude. Sebold initially represents Grandma Lynn in the play as one of the more hardened characters, upon her arrival we already get an idea of the character as someone who is unaffected by personal crisis’s such as Susie’s death, even before her arrival the call between Abigail and Grandma Lynn helps to portray her hardened character, the way that she is blankly states that “She has to come because it’s Susies funeral” she doesn’t seem to show much emotion on her arrival and the way that she brings a more vibrant atmosphere into the solemn and sad house. Even on her arrival instead of confronting the issue of Susies death she orders for a “Stiff Drink”.
This book is about a girl named Maleeka. She is bullied because of her very dark skin. Maleeka soon becomes ashamed of her own self. She is also teased about the clothes her mom makes for her, since her father died and they now are poor. So Maleeka turns to Charlese Jones, a girl who you don't mess with and who always wants to be in control.
This also works on the kids name when the parents give it to them. The name Shyanne, Crystal, Cindy are names for low educated parents so teachers will think those girls are not educated well and when they get jobs their boss will think they are not educated. So yes, names and family backgrounds matters to the kids. One mess up of choosing the wrong name, your background can ruin your child life. This book, “Freakonomics” By Steven D. In paragraph four, Esperanza used a synecdoche to show that even though she inherited her great grandmother name, she did not want to follow the same path as her. In the short story “Everyday Use”, education seemed to make a rift in the relationship not only between the mother and the daughter, but also between the sisters. Dee was one to always try and outsmart her family members always seeking answers knowing no one knew. It was mama who eventually got the community together to help send Dee to school so her daughter would be happy and satisfied. The values of heritage seem to have been lost with the gain of knowledge when Dee has gone to college.
Rude, selfish, honest, and two-faced; those are all some traits that describe Jing-Mei and Amy. In the stories Two Kinds and, And Summer is Gone, Jing-Mei and Amy both go through a struggle with a change. Jing-Mei and Amy changed because they wanted to be their own person, which makes them more similar because of c/c. Jing-Mei and Amy are the same because they both are rude to the people around them so they could be their own person. In Jing-Mei’s point of view she was rude to her mom by bringing back terrible memories.
During this process her daughter’s destiny goes astray from what she had envisioned for her and blamed herself for the outcome. Although, to some it may seem that she took the easy way out, this mother battles herself all the while asking herself what she could have done differently. When she writes “Oh my dear girls—for to such only am I writing—listen not to the voice of love, unless sanctioned by paternal approbation.”(P. 55), she is trying to tell women to put themselves in a position in which they are not exploited, and listen to their brains and parents rather than their heart and emotions. The story of Charlotte Temple is somewhat extreme in the sense that she was a very naïve and sheltered young woman that didn’t really know what the world was like outside the walls of her home or the border school. She was weak and she was dependent on other people to make the decisions for her. Rowson is also warning the women about other people in their life. The parents have the best intentions for their children, but other people might not.
Kat is disappointed with teenage popularity and claims “I’m not hostile, just annoyed” This shows her choice to ignore the upcoming dramas of teenage normalcy and embrace her own individuality. Her attitude shows she has deep anger issues likely caused by her Mother’s abandonment and the fact that her younger sister is now the centre of attention. “I don’t only want to be an object to be adored” With the use of this quote it shows her anger towards today’s society and the only way to belong to something is to be ‘popular’ or to just be an object for everyone else’s entertainment. Kat is outspoken in class and expresses strong feminist views from Betty Friedan, Simone de Beauvoir, and Sylvia Plath, which help support her theory and aggression towards teenage ‘normalcy.’ But by the end of the movie Kat starts to fall in love with Patrick who is very similar to her and is happy not fitting in with the expectations of teenage popularity, therefore she finds her sense belonging and learns that pushing people away isn’t always the answer.
