Due to the nonexistence of a higher authority or family member at Bly, the governess in the Turn of the Screw by virtue of Victorian society was the primary caretaker of the children and the household. The information the prologue provides about the governess depicts the predisposition that she could be vulnerable as she is a “flattered anxious girl … With no previous experience”. However, she may be in awe of Harley Street and the grand estate of Bly, overwhelmed by her surroundings, she may not necessarily be too frightened to tell her story reliably. James’s style of writing in the novella creates room for the readers to view the governess as frightened and vulnerable whilst on the other hand certain and confident. The governess’s adoration of the uncle after visiting him at Harley Street and her belief that he needed her reflects the governess’s naivety.
However if the responder were to read Fay Weldon’s Letters to Alice on first reading Jane Austen, the connections between the two would shape and then reshape the responder’s understanding of both texts. The two texts are connected most obviously through Weldon’s commentary and analysis of Austen’s writing and social and historical context. However the two texts are also connected through their didactic purpose, examination of values, use of epistles and their female author’s status and feminist messages. Whilst all of these connections do enrich each text, it is to a limited extent as both texts also work in isolation. Aunt Fay writes to her niece Alice in the hope of teaching her about Austen and her writing and what better way to do that than by direct reference to Austen’s most successful text, Pride and Prejudice?
Although Tan knows that the way her and her mother converse is not grammatically correct, she has grown to love it. Leonard Bernstein Ms. Vowles ENG4UV-03 7 July 2014 Essay Analysis Upon reading the essay, I believe that the overall essay was very effective. The introduction of the essay was strong, and had an interesting “hook”. By asking the reader a rhetorical question, the author was able to lead into his main idea. The examples the author used were effective; Dan Brown and Stephen King have an international following for their mystery novels. However, I felt that it was irrelevant when the author said, “Although many female writers claim to be the ‘Queen of Crime Fiction”…” I believe this phrase could be eliminated.
Her reviews would take shape only after she gave herself permission to write a terrible first draft. Lamott’s intended audience is anyone who wants to write, either for class or simply for leisure. Hence, her audience is quite wide and I applaud her for using simple language, without resorting to complex jargons, in making her point. The purpose of her essay is to change the dynamics of writing. Often to amateur writers, the process of writing seems like a chore; a mountain of words to sieve through before they can create a comprehensible wall of text.
