Do you know what it means to have a Narcissistic Personality Disorder, from my interpretation; this disorder seems to be acquired throughout the crucial years of a child's development, it is characterized by dramatic, emotional behavior, which is the same as antisocial and borderline personality disorders. Perhaps this behavior is related to a child’s upbringing. There are many traits that characterize a narcissistic personality disorder for example an individual with this disorder might have grown up with a single parent for nurturing, that was denied the opportunity to have a father figure and to learn from two parents. Nevertheless this can cause child like qualities causing them to depend heavily upon an alpha figure to provide. Another possible reason for having this disorder could be an only child becoming accustomed to all attention and special treatments given by the single parent. For instance a child growing up in a protective environment up with no education and spoiled rotten. Or possibly, the mental health of a child could have established a substantial connection to their immediate environment, what have they seen and witnessed while growing up and in the present. An evaluation of these potential outcomes could be examined inside the main character named Saber in the story “The Search” by Naguib Mahfouz. “Narcissists come in all shapes, sizes, and degrees.” ( ). Saber displays several symptoms of Narcissistic Personality Disorder, including his deep insecurity about everything he does, he tends to set unrealistic goals, he does not take anyone else’s feelings into consideration, and he has difficulty keeping healthy relationship, this all must have something to do with his state of mental health. Sabers upbringing is directly related to these kinds of behaviors that he expresses. Saber seems to have a dark past and hopeless future ahead of him.
