Her boisterousness and hostility is epitomised in the stage direction [She strikes him]. This indicates that Katherina employs physical abuse as a self defense mechanism against Petruchio. Such violent behavior was classed as shrew-like and highly unorthodox in the Elizabethan Era, particularly towards a male suitor of a high social class. Thus, Katherina challenges the values of courtship and marriage, in a way that is relevant to her society. Correspondingly, in 10 Things I Hate About You, Kat rebels against the social expectations of the permeating values of courtship and dating.
The result of the actions they have committed or what has been done to them, they react similarly but at different approaches, creating an idea of violence. Lady Macbeth and the protagonist from The Laboratory both used the convenience of their femininity to gain what they desire most, which is power. Considering they both want to inflict pain on a man to gain what they want. Lady Macbeth uses a persuasive technique to get what she wants, she does this by challenging Macbeth through questioning his manhood, ‘’When you durst do it, then you were a man’’. This challenges Macbeth emotionally causing him to reconsider his manhood, ‘’Prithee, peace: I dare do all that may become a man’’.
This woman uses mental and emotional harassment to attempt at getting what she desires. Curley’s wife is repeatedly displayed as a tart. Her overly flirtatious personality leads to her inevitable peril. Steinbeck uses this character to represent a different type of person who attacks emotionally and physically in unique ways. One example of her harassment is displayed when she meets George and Lennie on the first day of their arrival.
The Corrupting Power of Women The portrayal of women in Of Mice and Men is limited and unflattering. We learn early on that Lennie and George are on the run from the previous ranch where they worked, due to encountering trouble there with a woman. Misunderstanding Lennie’s love of soft things, a woman accused him of rape for touching her dress. George berates Lennie for his behavior, but is convinced that women are always the cause of such trouble. Their enticing sexuality, he believes, tempts men to behave in ways they would otherwise not.
To be brief, Ophelia’s syndrome comes from 3 super egos that she has which her Masculine voice, men telling her what to do, her libido which is her sexual desire for Hamlet and wanted to be loved and cared for. also her power struggle, having the chance of speaking her mind for once and standing up for herself and against Hamlet. Ophelia and her syndrome has been characterized as being dependent on other people and when she has no one to go to, has no hope and think her work is over. Her mind must think that she has only one option which is committing suicide, and thats exactly what she
Like a normal man that has an immensely gorgeous girl in her late teens thrown at you, John Proctor fell in sin and committed adultery and had sexual relations with Abigail. This gives Abigail a pseudo-sense of anticipation that they will once be together. But this all twists invalidately, when Proctor shuns her down for his wife and good name. Subsequently Elizabeth Proctor known of this affair and as in result Elizabeth is forced to let Abigail go as the servant in the Proctor house.
When john takes Mary to the court so she can testify against the girls they think it’s a bit suspicious. When the girls are brought into the court they accuse Mary of bewitching them. John gets fed up and he confesses to his affair with Abigail to prove that she is not a goodly person and that she is jealous of his wife. Elizabeth is brought to the court to prove of what john is saying is true but because of her kindness and her love for her husband she lies to protect his name. Abigail and the girls pretend Mary is bewitching them again which make Mary breakdown and accuse john of being a witch.
In Lepines’ letter, he sites how feminists had ruined his life and they were the reason he committed this crime. Feminist theory on crime explains this thought clearly. Lepines’ ideas about the roles of women were formed by a patriarchal society leading him to believe in some that women were not equal to men and should not be given all the opportunities of men (Knuttila, 305). These women wanted to be educated and become engineers; Lepine could not cope with this fact and blamed women, namely feminist for his short comings in life. Did Lepine come up with these ideas himself or was he a product of a society that dictated classical roles and oppression of women?
One of the ways this is illustrated through is in the second stanza he describes her as being ‘slapped up’. The onomatopoeic phrase suggests men’s sarcastic prejudice view on women as sexual objects; it also emphasizes the challenges the girl is facing in men’s attitudes toward her. Larkin also humiliates the girl by describing the obscene disfigurement to the image of her ‘huge tits... A tuberous cock and balls’. The taboo language helps to demonstrate more than just adolescent immaturity but deliberate and repeated attempts to degrade her by a kind of visual rape. However one could also argue that Larkin seems to justify violence against women by suggesting that access to women is something men have been unfairly deprived of.
By having sex to rebel against the mind-controlling Youth Movement’s talks about pro-creational sex, Julia goes against the Party because “sexual privation induces hysteria…and could be transformed into war-fever” (822). Sex poses danger to the Party, and because the Party outlaws it, Julia becomes an outsider. Unlike Winston and Julia, Parsons transforms from an outsider who hated Big Brother to an insider after staying in “the place where there is no darkness” (757). The place Parson transforms in refers to the room in the Ministry of Love in which torture alters people’s beliefs. Parson originally holds the belief that evil exists inside the Party, but he changes his beliefs to a pro-Party stance, even going as far as to thanking the Party for saving him.
