But the major isn’t nearly as important as the toolbox of skills you come out with and the experiences you have’”(Zernike). Students are increasingly focused on how their major will translate into a job. Zernike interviews multiple professors and advisors from schools all over the country and somewhat of a consensus is found. According to Bartholomae, students struggle with adapting to academic discourse and using the commonplaces of the discourse because they must be able to place themselves within the discourse rather than just imitating it, which is a hard thing to learn and an even harder thing to put into practice when most students have no previous experience with the discourse of academics
“By tying grades to money, we give students incentives not to take risks” (Vogel, 392) that stop them from choosing challenging courses in college. Students find easier courses through word of mouth or websites that previous students rate their professor in. I always ask people who previously took the course I am interested in whether or not I have a chance of passing the course with a C or higher. Students are afraid of putting their grade point average at risk because the grade point average is a component of the application process that helps colleges decide who to accept. .
Instead of worrying about the pay off the students should be concerned with developing all they can intellectually. The author then expresses their feelings towards multi-year contracts. They tell how tenure plans which would be more beneficial. They believe that professors have no motive to improve their skills when rewarded with tenure plans, for themselves or their students. Another thing mentioned in the article that people who come to teach in a college that are not actually considered teachers.
There are many challenges that students will face as they enter graduate level education, and one of those challenges will be staying motive and remembering why students purse a graduate degree. For some students, “graduate students suffer from insecurity, anxiety, and even boredom” (How To Succeed In Graduate School: A Guide For Students And Advisors , 1994). Reformation takes when students, faculty and administrators see that what has worked for years isn’t working anymore. Ultimately, the students are the product of a university where they are either changed to make a difference in the world or offer little in return to the community. According to the authors and I agree when they say “college should be imaginative and integrative…where ideas are at work (Palmer, 2010).” It is easy to say what college should be or can be easy but difficult to do – that is why they are calling for reformation. For students who aren’t sure exactly what they want to do, they can take a variety of classes so that maybe they can find something they are interested in. But if there were a lot of classes needed to graduate then by the time each student is done with all these classes, they are forced to take classes aimed towards their major. But one major flaw with this system is that sometimes students can become too focused in their major. Students may take electives that somehow tie into their major. Then they will have a very narrow minded education.
Bloom has a vision for the modern student. This vision is for the modern student to be wrapped and crushed under the weight of enlightenment and revelation through education. His vision is somewhat blocked from him unfortunately, and might never see it fulfilled. The behemoth that is blocking his vision is the current universal model for educating students, and getting them to their specialization faster. Bloom has problems with the modern university system and how they are teaching the modern student.
It is hard to focus and my study methods are vastly differed from those of an average college student. I am an aspiring student but struggles with focusing in on main projects as I want to ramble in a different direction. In order to get past this I must get in to a routine that requires a type of consistency in my studies. In the same way, Malcolm X had to learn to enhance his education he had to study consistently all day and every free moment in his day. I have to do the same in order to become a successful student.
Our country prides itself on encouraging its citizens to better themselves through education. (P) While its priority has been high school graduation, many jobs now require college degrees, making higher education more important than ever. While I understand that every American should be expected to sacrifice during this hard time, just as we were in World War II, I feel that this particular sacrifice would put our country in an even worse state. (S) Our work force will not be prepared to handle nor understand the advancements that we have strived so hard to achieve. College is made to prepare students with the newest information possible, so that we can constantly be improving ourselves and be able continue to compete with the world’s leading nations.
