Developing Potential in Sport – The Role of Sportscotland Sportscotland is Scotland’s principal organization for the development of sport in this country. Their main aims and objectives are to encourage and ensure a high participation level in sport, a steady development in ability and a high degree of success on the European and World stage. To do this, they must ensure that any funds they have are invested intelligently and in the correct areas. They believe that everything they do is for the benefit of Scottish sport and its participants, and strive to encourage more individuals and organisations to get involved in the country’s sport. Sportscotland has established several different methods of achieving its aims, in regards to improving Scottish sport as a whole. One such example is the Active Schools Network. The main focus of Active Schools is participation, and aims to improve the opportunities for people to get involved in sport, especially “hard to reach groups”. These groups include girls and young women, ethnic minorities, children from deprived areas and the disabled. Active Schools also attempts to build bridges with other clubs and organisations which will give youngsters the chance to continue and develop their sporting potential outside their school. Another example of Sportscotland developing ways to improve Scotland’s sport is through their Institute of Sport. Describing this as their ‘High performance arm’, it operates at the other end of the scale from Active Schools, moving from participation to developing elite athletes into world class performers. It aims to help fulfil Scotland’s sporting potential on the world stage and focuses on many areas which include: coaching, programme planning, sports medicine, sports science, strength and conditioning, performance analysis and performance lifestyle guidance.
