EG. 1121.E.120 The Role of Nature “Plant seeds of happiness, hope, success, and love; it will all come back to you in abundance. This is the law of nature." This quote, by Steve Maraboli, simplifies the role of nature. Nature has a big impact on our lives, though we don’t always realize. How amazing is it that the weather or season can affect our emotions and behavior. As we read the stories “The Storm” and “The Story of an Hour”, we see how the author, Kate Chopin vividly illustrates the relationship between nature and the emotions of her main characters. “The Storm” takes place in Louisiana in the midst of a storm. As the storm builds, we see the emotions and the behavior of the main character Calixta building as if they were one in the same. Calixta, we learn is a housewife, she has a husband and son and she mainly does house chores. In the beginning of the story as the storm is brewing she has already done the laundry and is now sewing. While Calixta is home, her family is in the grocery waiting for the storm to pass. An old friend of Calixta, Alcee, stops at her house looking for refuge from the storm. At first the storm was a little frightening for Calixta; she was worried about her son and the lightning scared her because she felt the house would be hit next. But Alcee’s strong arms were there to comfort her. As the storm was already happening outside, a storm between Alcee and Calixta was developing, her face was warm and steaming and her eyes full of desire. Like the storm was inevitable and natural, so was the love affair between them that day. As the storm became more intense, their love making matched its intensity. But as the sound of the thunder began to fade and the rain fell softly, they became drowsy noting that the affair would soon be over. Once the storm ended, their love affair did as well; their
