“Im sure that Alice isn’t the murderer and that Jack is”, said my friend while we were trying to interpret the murderer in a movie. “What? Why do you think so?”, I asked to which he replied, “Don’t you watch such movies? The murderers are never females”. This is just one example of a stereotype created by a source of media namely movies. Stereotype refers to the conclusion regarding a particular matter (person or a thing).Media is responsible for creating gender roles as it influences people’s mind using its various forms such as advertisements, movies, television and also print media which has got a large effect in today’s world. Though there are certain gender roles being set up in every society, media plays a large role too. In today’s world, the media has a large influence on perpetuating the lifestyle of people by the different methods of portrayal of each gender. They depict the two genders, each having their own characteristics and roles. The different sources of media such as movies, advertisements, etc play a crucial role in doing so. It has been said that television is the most persuasive form of media responsible in creating such stereotypes and that approximately 96.7 percent of families own a TV (Lantagne, 2014). The different visuals shown in the TV are responsible for perpetuating people’s thoughts on themselves and others regarding the gender roles. The visuals they see are so catching that they tend to believe them. The media portrays only the part what they want to make the people believe and they omit the rest of it. These stereotypes about gender created by media have an everlasting influence on people’s lives as it leads to the prevention of people reaching their potential in terms of their personal and career lives.
