A manager is a person who through coercion and manipulation gets people to do things that they ordinarily would not want to do or would normally not do.” Discuss the role of a manager. How would you describe the role of a manager? Do you think the above definition and the assigned articles describe the role accurately based on your own experience? Is there anything you would add? The role of a manager is to structurally ensure that an organization is moving forward with whatever endeavor is currently on the plate. This does not necessarily require strong leadership skills as we discussed in class but a good understanding of the organization and its goals. The manager accomplishes his duties by whatever means is necessary that should be of an ethical fashion. Does a manager use coercion and manipulation to achieve his goals; of course. I cannot think of any work places that do not use these tactics. It is part of being human not just part of the work place. There are many times when we do not want to do certain tasks but have to accomplish them for the better of the whole. The job of the manager is to ensure that they are accomplished by using these important techniques. I have had to convince people to perform job duties under very tense hostile environments. This required a great deal of coercion and manipulation to get the job done but it was necessary at the time. In relationships we are regularly manipulated into doing things that we did not really want to do as well. It is part of human nature to go through these cycles with each other to accomplish tasks I am not very big on just the role of a manager. I prefer the blend of manager and leader and always strive to ensure that I perform in this manner. The best Leader/Manager is the one that takes into account what it takes for present and future success. I liked the article by Savage and Sales
