The Benefits, Importance and Role of a Good Citizen in Society in Relation to the UPS and Equality and Diversity Introduction A citizen is defined as someone who is a member of a political community or state such as a country. In this document I will assess the benefits of a good citizen, analyse the importance of good citizens and evaluate the role that good citizens play, all in relation to the uniformed public services. The benefits and importance of good citizens to the UPS A good citizen is someone who does what they can to be a useful member of society. They volunteer and work to be involved with their local community. Good citizens help with crime prevention, for example with a neighbourhood watch scheme, they come forward as witnesses to a crime and report any crime they see, they follow the laws, are polite and friendly and help to protect the environment and keep their local area free of rubbish. The benefits of a good citizen are the following; a. Volunteering There are a number of volunteer services within the UK public services that benefit both the public and public services. Volunteering is a good characteristic and benefit of a god citizen. These services consist of civilian volunteers who work alongside and support the uniformed public services. These services are; 1) The army reserves, previously called the Territorial Army, which consists of part time soldiers and regular reserves. Army reserves give up their own free time to complete training, curses, exercises and operational tours. They give up 3-4 hours a week and for training and exercising. They also have to complete 2 week annual camp every year and 1 weekend a month. 2) Reserves for the armed forces include the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve (RAFVR), the Royal Marines Reserve (RMR) and the Royal Navy Reserve (RNR). Reserves are paid the equivalent of regular soldiers
