Role and Functions of Law Paper Jelizia M. Rivera LAW/421 November 18, 2012 David Feldheim Role and Functions of Law Paper This paper will discuss the case of Cipollone V. Liggett Group, Inc. I will also discuss the functions and roles of law in business and society. I will explain how the functions and roles of law that plays a part in my past or present job(s). Cipollone V. Liggett Group, Inc. The first function would be to establish structure for the federal government (including qualifications for certain government offices) and rules for amending the constitution (Melvin, p. 4, 2011). For Example: In the Cipollone V. Liggett case the company had gone through two federal laws before advertising their product. The second function would be granting specific powers for the different branches of government (Melvin, p. 4, 2011). By granting each branch specific powers, it helps each branch focus on what needs to be done. The last function is providing procedural protections for the United State citizens from wrongful government actions. This last function is very important for our society and for businesses because if an individual or a business does find themselves in trouble it allows them to be treated fairly and have the right for a fair trial (Melvin, p. 4, 2011). The role that our laws play in our lives, whether it is in our businesses or personal lives, creates structure. Not only does it help people and businesses, but it also helps our country keep the crime rate low. If our country didn’t have any laws and structure, our world would be a complete disaster. Our company is small but is doing very well as far as making money; some of our employees do have a problem with following rules and regulations. The other day one of the owners found out that one of the other owner daughters that is working for our company in the shipping department has started her own coin business. This is a conflict of interest, although it is not illegal if a policy is not given to each employee to sign. That is why it is so important for policies and rules to be enforced at all times. If there aren’t any policies and rules enforced than the owners can find themselves in a bad situation such as a law suit against each
