In 1980, Congress re-instated the requirement that young men register with the Selective Service System. In 1975, President Gerald Ford suspended compulsory draft registration. In 1980 President Jimmy Carter approved it again. At present the United States military operates using only volunteer troops. In there is a war or a strong necessity, the president can call the reserve troops and the National Guard as supplement soldiers.
Conscription + America = Bad “Hell No, We Won’t Go!” This was a popular phrase during the 60s, used by citizens who had been called up by the draft to fight. Conscription, or draft, has been used in America as early as the nineteenth century when forming Napoleons’ army. The early American colonies didn’t have a draft but they required men to serve in a militia. During the 1860s and Vietnam the draft caused great riots and problems throughout America (Rich and Gerson 1). Although it didn’t surface in America until colonial times, the idea of forcing men to serve in military has been around since ancient worlds.
Task 1 for AGT1 The Declaration of Independence was written by Thomas Jefferson in 1776 for the purpose of establishing America as an independent nation and to explain the reasons why the colonies were declaring their independence. In it, he states that governments were to be put in place by the governed to uphold the unalienable rights of “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”. If the government failed or was destructive to this cause, the governed not only had the right to remove the current government and establish a new one, but a moral duty to do so. Because of the treatment of the colonists, Jefferson saw it necessary to the success of the people that this document be written. Some of the most recognizable and debated statements are found in the Declaration.
The fact that there is no nobler calling in the world than to be a soldier in the United States Army. 2. He refers to the officers taking the oath to defend the Constitution and the Nation. Officers must make this their most important mission. We must support the officials elected by the people we swear to protect from enemies foreign and domestic.
Sam Brockie November 9, 2009 Period 6 Being an American Essay The most important civic value an American citizen should have is responsibility. If our citizens did not have responsibility then America would be plunged into anarchy and chaos. One must possess responsibility and self control if one is to have such freedoms as guaranteed to every American. Responsibility is so important to being an American because the government cannot have complete control over us. If citizens are to be entrusted with such cherished personal freedoms as guaranteed in the constitution, then they must have the responsibility to obey the law and to be productive, lest their freedoms be taken away.
Brighton Fontenot Ms. Thompson ENGL 1010 – 38 6 October 2012 The Immigration Conflict In this essay I will explain the dispute over immigration between President Barrack Obama and his rivaling political candidate Mitt Romney. Barrack Obama, a member of the Democratic Party and the current President of the United States believes the immigration system is unfair and has made several statements promising to make it more efficient and just. Obama has said “As long as I’m President, I will not give up on immigration… because it’s the right thing to do, period.” To illustrate his obligation to this issue Obama has made a commitment to work alongside Congress in order to pass the DREAM Act. The DREAM Act is an act to reform immigration
It can be as small as just exercising our birth rights as U.S. citizens. It can be as big as running for office! By occasionally writing letters to the president about how I feel about certain issues, like the world’s current energy crisis, I preserve American culture. By simply respecting authority and obeying the law, I preserve American culture. The Constitution has established and maintained a culture of liberty in the United States.
Military Toby Shoemaker Com 323 Nancy Miller July 12, 2010 Military Have you ever wondered what the cost of freedom was? There is really only one answer and that is bloodshed. Too many people, that is a scary thought; but a scarier thought is the cost of not having freedom. The military protects our country and has many benefits to serving. If the draft were to be reinstated, the citizens of America and America itself would be better off.
It involves the actual behaviors towards groups such as excluding or restricting members of one group from opportunities that are available to another group; which began during and even after Andrew Johnson’s presidency. The Constitutional amendment became the primary vehicle for changing toward a more equal nation. In simplest terms, an amendment is a formal process that adds to, or takes something away from the U.S. Constitution. While the Constitution itself established a democratic system of government, because of the necessity of compromise, it left several important issues vague or undefined. Examples included voting rights and citizenship, and the founders passed this to the states to decide.
Why One Years’ Service should be Mandatory Steven Wunderlin Grantham University Mr. Timothy Goss English Composition 6/7/2011 Why One Years’ Service should be Mandatory Because serving in the military is important for the defense of the United States, and military service instills ideals like integrity, selfless service and honor, the United States government should require all high school graduates to enlist for at least one year in the United States military. In this essay I intend to prove that one year’s active duty service the U.S. military is what every high school graduate needs to begin their working career. Many might argue that this action is unnecessary since we have what is called the Selective Service Act. This act requires that all eighteen year old males register with the government in case of an emergency that would require more manpower than our current military can provide. I believe that this act should be repealed and replaced with a law that requires all high school graduates whether they are male or female enlist for at least one year in the active duty military.
