The Reality of Internet Addiction The dead silence of the house is shattered by the all too familiar theme song, echoing throughout the house. The 3’’ x 3’’ screen radiates with low quality animation and faint colors. My sweaty palms grasp the sides of the Gameboy while I bite my tongue and squint my eyes. Finally, I’ve beaten Pokémon Gold. I proudly hit the save button, then the power button and scurry off to the window; still pouring rain. As much as I enjoyed spending countless hours playing Gameboy on my warm, soft couch, I wanted to be outside with my friends. How the Internet Has Affected My Life When I was a kid, it was normal to have a Nintendo 64, a Game Boy, a TV and one computer that the whole family used. I enjoyed using all of these things but I found myself using them only a few times a week. The only time I used the internet was for watching the occasional funny YouTube video. Most of my free time was spent outside playing with my friends, exploring in the woods, or getting a game of street hockey going with the neighborhood crew. I would get home from school and immediately want to go play with my neighborhood friends. It was at times when it was raining, or my friends couldn’t play when I found myself using the technology available to me. There was no Facebook, and internet browsing was a minuscule part of my life. It wasn’t until my late middle school years that I was first introduced to internet use in depth. We were required to take a computer class every day of every week. We learned mainly how to type the correct way but we also learned how to use the internet effectively and efficiently. 10 years have passed since then and now I have a smartphone or what I like to call my personal computer. Smartphones allow the internet to be accessed wirelessly from almost anywhere without the use of a computer. This new form of instant access to the
