Many artists struggle with the idea that what they do is meaningless. That it serves no greater purpose to the world other than simple entertainment, with no deeper emotional value. To some art is a very important aspect of there lives, it gives them a sense of enlightenment, self independence, and escape. This is the contrast between arts role in society as enlightenment and entertainment. It is often assumed that the main function of art is to be enjoyable and amusing, to be fun. But this is an insufficient assumption and misses what the true role of art is.

Art has various meanings. Art can make us think and help us find our highest emotions. It touches those that admire or feel it. Art is a way to find our ideal mental state, or is our own way to see reality. Art reveals emotions and feelings that we have never experienced before. Art connects people by presenting a universal idea that everyone can relate to. We have to admit that art is a creation, that artists can always create new things, or new ideas. Art doesn’t have to be pleasurable or enriching but art can and should be both. We can not give art restrictions or definitions, because art has no definition. We keep trying to define art, but every definition is missing something. With every definition comes a new way to define it, leading us to the conclusion that it is not only hard to find the right definition, but it is also, in many ways impossible. Trying to define art trivializes it, takes away from the spontaneity. John Keats states in a letter to his brothers that “the excellence of every art is its intensity”. With a great piece of art you will and should experience a very wide range of emotions, and it can also give you a strong sensation of place and time.
