The Rationale of Dwelling to Speaking Skill Enhancement for Language Use in School Environment As a senior high English teacher, the researcher often get startled on finding inadequate language proficiency among newly enrolled students who has accomplished three years learning English in junior high. Not only do they have fairly poor grammatical knowledge, but also, particularly, hesitation in producing oral language even when dealing with responding to some basic language functions (i.e. greeting, leave-taking, etc.), or even maintaining conversation on some relatively-easy topics (i.e. telling reason for being late, giving few personal information, etc.). What more, although after attending English classes for considerably long period of time in high school, I also observe that their communicative competence, mainly in conversational discourse, seems to barely develop but little. Such predicament is not uncommon among both younger and older students. I occasionally have casual banter with my students to reflect our learning and also to figure out what might be their actual expectation in learning English. And I keep being wondered that being able to converse in English, has quite often been their most perceived goal in spite of their presumption towards English as a difficult subject to learn. Surely, I would not assume being able to converse as being capable to engage in any complex conversation in which high level of communicative competence would be needed, but rather in any simple conversation within school context among peers as well as between students and their English teacher. Regardless such need might be solely subjective; however I believe that their voice would be something valuable which I should take into account when attempting to solve my problems with English instruction.
