He raises his voice at Aunt Harriet and tells her to go pray for trying to abet Emily; leading her to commit suicide, "…Aunt Harriet's body had been found in the river…" (74). At first, Joseph is calm when he sees Harriet at the door. Once he is informed of the situation, he bursts out with fury. He makes it clear to her that what she did is wrong and that she should go pray for forgiveness. This proves that Joseph cares more about tradition than family.
Courtney Rausch Period 6th May 23rd 2012 Mr. Blair Lit/Comp Chapter 13: Carton asks Lucie to never forget him, to always remember hi as the person that has saved her children and her children’s children. He says this because he know that Madame Defarge is going to come after her and kill her and her children. He also tell her that he would sacrifice himself for her, and he was hoping to go talk to her that night and to know that she is the only person that cares was sad for him to know. It was sad because they have a “mother to son” bond not a “wife to husband” bond. She loved him unconditionally like a mother would do to a child.
They did this because the Pueblo believed that when people died, they were sent to the clouds to live with the Cloud People, or Shiwanna. When Teofilo joined Shiwanna, he would be able to send them rain for their crops to grow. Ken and Leon’s actions showed the Native American beliefs and how they continue even into death and help comfort the leaving. Leon and Ken didn’t seem very upset about their grandfather’s death, because of the Pueblo’s deep belief in their gods and their trust in nature and
When Maggie Glenn, an upstate South Carolina photographer, takes an almost propagandist picture of Mr. Kowalsky looking sad staring at the river of where his passed daughter rests this story picks up fire and politicians from the surrounding area get involved to help get this man’s daughter out of the river, which maddens the locals who would not like to see the only free flowing river in the state be tampered with. Installing a temporary dam in the Tamassee River to retrieve the body of twelve year old Ruth Kowalsky seems like a good, safe way to securely recover this little girl’s body, but the law clearly states “certain selected rivers of the Nation which, with their immediate environments, possess outstandingly remarkable scenic, recreational, geologic, fish and wildlife, historic, cultural, or other similar values, shall be preserved in free-flowing condition, and that they and their immediate environments shall be protected for the benefit and enjoyment of present and future generations.” Then it states “alteration of modification of the streambed will not
Before George performs euthanasia he talks to Lennie by the Salinas River about how their life is going to be on their dream farm. George says to Lennie, “Look across the river, Lennie an’ I’ll tell you so you can almost see it” (Steinbeck 105). Lennie had a painless, almost happy, death because he was picturing his dream of tending the rabbits. Euthanasia fulfills dreams so the patient isn’t regretful that they made this
“There was a flicker and then a flame of comprehension across her face, and she spoke.” shows Jackson’s metaphorical rebirth. Phoenix Jackson can be seen as a Christ figure. Retrieving the medicine soothing medicine for her permanently sick grandson can be viewed as God’s grace. She can also be seen as a biblical hero as she has to face temptation and trials on her journey but succeeds unharmed. On her journey, a log is placed across a creek in which Phoenix must cross.
The mother understood that the Congolese people did have spirituality and they did have a God. They didn’t know what to call their God, but they knew there was someone out there more powerful than them. But by Nathan telling them that what they were doing was wrong was messed up in itself. The mother felt like who is Nathan to tell them that they are doing wrong when in actuality they are already doing what he wants them to do, just not the way he wants them to do it. For instance the whole baptism idea, Nathan wanted them to go to the river to get baptized but the villagers always tried to keep their children away from the river because of alligators.
Hence, the word “Buddha” is common to the Vietnamese because it represents the beliefs of the society. Despite, the mentioning of Buddha that doesn’t show any strong sign to religious influence in the story. The teachings of reincarnation and karma are also incorporated within the story. In the tale, Tam is plunge head down in the water by her stepmother, but she reincarnated into a bird, fruit and back into her natural body. Reincarnation is part of what Buddha teaches, which says that the human spirit is always moving around death and rebirth, which is called the circle of life.
Cora is brave even when surrounded by Mingo Indians, and she comforts Alice and protects her. Cora creates a plan to save the others but leaves herself vulnerable to capture. In the secret cave they were hiding in to escape from battle, Cora tells Hawkeye and the other men to escape while she and Alice stay with the wounded David Gamut. When Cora executes her master’s plan she says “Then try the river. Why linger to add the number of victims of our merciless enemies?”(75).
He stood in front of the craft to protect it.” (p. 146) Both Crocodile Guts and Mother have passed, meaning they are spirits that Nhamo is imagining to keep her company. She doesn’t want to lose them or their everso presence. The Odyssey is about a man’s journey back to his family, similarly like Nhamo going to Zimbabwe. Like the most memorable moment of the book, I feel like the overall theme is to use your mind over your strength and power. Even though Odysseus has remarkable strength, he relies much more on his mind.
