Religious Studies October 16 2014 Qur’an Surahs 1-2 Review Reading and annotating the first two surahs of the Quran was an extremely interesting experience. I chose this religion because being an Arab, I had always heard about Muslims and the Qur’an but had never actually took the time to read about it, and form my own opinions on it, therefore; I took advantage of this opportunity to try to understand Islam better. Although reading two surahs is not enough to form an opinion, it has definitely corrected numerous misconceptions I had about Islam. What is more, it helped me understand this religion more as I had little to no knowledge about Islam, due to the fact that I was raised in a Christian family. The Qur’an is divided into 114 chapters, each known as “surahs”, and each surah consists of verses known as “ayat”. The first surah of the Qur’an is often referred to as “Al Fatihah”, which in Arabic means “The Opening.” The first aya begins with “Bism Elah Al Rahman El Rahim, Al Hamdulilah Rabu El Alamin” which translates to “In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful, All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds.” This aya is extremely popular amongst Muslims; they often say it before they begin almost anything. Moreover, Al Fatihah is a popular praying to say when the father of the groom and the Mettias 2 father of the bride agree on marriages, as well as before business deals. Another interesting fact about Al Fatihah, is that it is a prayer which Allah has taught to all those who want to make a study of His book. It basically asks Allah the Merciful to show the people the “straight way”. Surah 2 is called “The Cow”. It is one of the most popular surahs in Qur’an and amongst Muslims.
