Pros, Cons, and Legal Issues The pros and cons of outsourcing the photography to a professional photographer. Utilizing a professional photographer for outsourcing comes with very specific concerns: who owns the imagery, what images are necessary for a given project, and what quality concerns impact the project in general. All of these can be easily planned for given proper time, focus, and understanding. Normally the allocation all of the rights to imagery is handled upfront, with the client (the one who is outsourcing) gaining all rights to images taken, and negatives, if relevant. It is possible to reduce the cost of the outsourcing by allowing certain unused pictures to go to the photographer for their own purposes and uses. This is often a risky idea, and should only be considered if the images are not unique enough to easily be identifiable later. A more common and relevant issue is the identification, and communication of exactly what is needed for a given project, or photo-shoot. If the photographer is being given creative license then the scope of the shoot, or images needed needs to be established upfront in great detail. This means that the company outsourcing must be critically aware of what they want, and able to work with a photographer for a shared, and applicable vision. If the photographer has been used before the risk is considerably less, as there is an understanding already. If the photographer being chosen is an expert, or specialist in a given photography type that is being requested, there can be difficulty in establishing the needs in advance and producing the necessary shots needed for a given project. Quality and creativity become an important part of the equation when negotiating with a tight budget, and working with unknown, or recommended photographers.
