Despite the increase in acceptance of homosexuality many Americans still view homosexuality as morally wrong. The degree of sexual orientation is key to one’s self-definition. The lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals are diverse and varied among cultural background, ethnic or race identity, age, income, and place of residence. Research on transgender populations has never been adequate being that most studies misrepresent the transgender populations by including gender-nonconformist individuals such as gay or lesbians peoples who’s gender identity is clearly distinct from their sexual orientation. Other studies have ignored a range of individuals who identify as
(Rathus, Nevid & Fichner-Rathus, 2005) Historical and scientific viewpoints are greatly significant in the way that gay persons distinguish themselves today and how the development of gay communities have grown and changed. For example, looking at the historical standpoint, many of the male Greeks seen exploring their curiosity of interacting sexually with a member of the same sex, as totally normal and natural. However, the Christian Church did not agree with this view. They viewed it as a sin and un-natural. They also believed that a gay person is committing a sin and would burn in hell for having a sexual experience with a person of the same sex.
People have choices and you are who you are by the choices you make and the experiences you have in life. In a study using identical twins to prove homosexuality is not genetic, Dr. Neil Whitehead states, “The predominant things that create homosexuality in one identical twin and not in the other have to be post-birth factors”. Dr. Whitehead believes same-sex attraction (SSA) is caused by “non-shared factors”, things happening to one twin but not the other, or a personal response to an event by one of the twins and not the other. Hyperactivity is a disorder caused by genetics and/or environmental factors. If a mother abuses drugs or alcohol when pregnant, the baby will be more likely to be born with certain disorders like hyperactivity.
Assignment: Historical and Scientific Perspective on Homosexuality PSY/265 Historical and Scientific Perspective on Homosexuality I believe that the historical and scientific perspectives in the text have shaped the way that gay individuals may perceive themselves in that they give these particular individuals different views of other people and the way that they look at gay people and their chosen lifestyle. The cross-cultural perspective is one perspective that gives gay individuals the perspectives from different cultures and the way that they view and think of the gay sexual orientation. While some cultures believe that gay relationships between two individuals of the same sex is wrong, some other cultures believe that it
Also it is the possibility that a male receives too little androgen at birth and the female receives too little estrogen at birth causing the homosexual and the lesbian behavior. As far as the nurturing aspect of homosexuality/lesbianism we’re all influenced by our environment, but to what extent? The nurture concept of homosexuality argues that social, parental and environmental variables influence a person's
This reading was about the viewpoints of heterosexuals who feel and question if homosexuality should be eliminated. Many do not feel that this is a way of life, and this reading proved the viewpoints of many who see homosexuality as a disease, immoral, lecherous, or anti-social. Even though those who do not agree or approve with homosexuality, they stand it. Throughout this reading, it talks about how society deals with homosexuality, trying to cure it when, really, society is just making it worse. Society makes it clear their disapproval of homosexuality, but tries to punish it in a way that does not begin to “cure” it at all.
Gender previously the age of consent for homosexual males made it difficult for the group to access medical attention as it was against the law to provide information on illegal sexual acts. Gay males exhibiting stereotypical characteristics are more visible than lesbians in society and are more likely to experience prejudices and anti-gay violence, which may lead to males to require a greater access to medical services. Location many services for gays and lesbians are located in cities, remote and rural locations may lack easy access to specific resources for this group. The internet and phone counselling services has decreased the impact of social isolation and created online opportunities for this group to interact with supportive
Studies believe that sex refers to the genitals, musculature, body shapes and hormones. Furthermore, we could also imply that sex is culturally constructed; essentially any form of phenomenon constructed can vary from culture to culture. Sex is believed to be the natural bodies, which can be divided into sexes without culture. Therefore, sex doesn’t genuinely dictate gender, but gender itself is the main cause why it is possible for biologist/scientist to identify a person’s sex. Gender is socially constructed, which doesn’t necessarily signify that females and males are the same nor does their culture makes them different.
Sexual Prejudice in the United States Mary Beth Mills American Public University Sexual prejudice refers to all negative attitudes based on sexual orientation, whether the target is homosexual, bisexual, or heterosexual. Given the current social organization of sexuality, however, such prejudice is almost always directed at people who engage in homosexual behavior or label themselves gay, lesbian, or bisexual. To this day sexual prejudice remains widespread in the United States. However, heterosexuals’ attitudes toward lesbian and gay men have become more accepting in recent decades. A survey conducted in 1973, indicated strong supporting regards to First Amendment Rights for homosexuals.
III (2009), Philosophy Hons., Patna Women's College, Patna University, Patna **Head, Department of Philosophy, Patna Women's College, Patna University, Patna The highly debatable issue of homosexual relationship comes under the purview of applied ethics and demands moral deliberations in order to discuss the legitimacy of their action. Homosexual acts are against our societal norms, traditional beliefs and religious principles but then they are voluntary acts based on freedom of choice and determinism and thus homosexuality cannot be debarred from being practised. Homosexuality was once considered a legal offence, but is now, decriminalized by majority of the developed countries. Homosexuals are even struggling for its legalization in co operation with various government and non- government organizations. Hence, in such a situation there is a call for a detailed discussion on the issue of homosexual relationship, especially its ethicality and its influence on the society.
