Issue 91: the primary goal of technological advancement should be to increase people's efficiency so that they have more leisure time. As the statement goes, the most significant purpose of technological development lies in increasing human beings' efficiency, through which they could thus attain more leisure time. I fundamentally agree with the speaker that the advancement of technology should and could make people's life much more efficient and convenient. However, this efficiency does not always serve to provide more happy relax time to modern people. On the contrary, it may breed more tension and pressure. There is no doubt that technological advances bring us a more efficient and comfortable life. Take the transport system for example, from the invention of steamer during the first industrial revolution to today's maglev, the speed of train has increased by more than 3 times, approximate 574km/h. This development has enormously shortened time wasted on the road and significantly improve people's efficiency. As a result, more leisure time are provided, people could enjoy a little vacation with no rush at the end of a busy week. On the other hand, just like a two-edge sword, the development of technology also generates a more rapid pace of life and a more tension environment of work. As we all know, the 8 hours of ordinary workday has been implied for more than one hundred years, though efficiency has been changing with each passing day, employees today are still required to work 8 hours per day, if not more. Apparently, in order to maximize profit, their leisure time does not increase proportionate to their efficiency. In conclusion, the advancement of technology should put people's efficiency improvement first and, in some extents, this promotion makes more leisure time attainable, yet this is not the definite consequence brought by high efficiency.
