THE PREVENTION OF LIFESTYLE DISEASES EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Lifestyle diseases such as stroke, cancer, heart disease and diabetes are by far the leading causes of mortality in the world. These diseases are the chief cause of death and disability worldwide. This reflects a significant change in dietary habits, lack of physical activity, alcohol consumption and tobacco use. According to the world health report 1996, while fighting diseases and fostering development, these infectious diseases kill millions of people a year and afflict hundreds of millions, particularly in the developing world. Noninfectious diseases particularly cancer, circulatory diseases, and chronic respiratory conditions now pose the greatest threat to health in developed countries. These are essentially the diseases that strike later in life and which, as life expectancy increases, will become more prevalent. As developing countries are becoming modernized, they are gradually controlling lifestyle diseases, and as such the life span expectancy of their populations is increasing. METHODOLOGY This paper seeks to identify what is lifestyle diseases, what are the major lifestyle diseases, what causes these lifestyle diseases, give a brief description of each of the major diseases, identify how does exercise help to prevent lifestyle diseases, identify how does diet affect lifestyle diseases, and provides some recommendations. The method used in deriving this paper is a combination of books and internet resources. The hope is to be able to educate people on what are lifestyle diseases and how they can help prevent them. THE PREVENTION OF LIFESTYLE DISEASES DELIMITATION The content of this paper is to help identify what are lifestyle diseases, what can be done to prevent them and to show how these diseases affect millions of people worldwide.
