Kodi Schaefer James Leonard Freshman Comp II October 16, 2014 The Power of Love In “ My Last Duchess “ Robert Browning portray a unusual love affair. “My Last Duchess “ is a portrait of a young beautiful women that was once duke of Ferrara wife before she pasted away under suspicious circumstances at seventeen. Robert Browning made duke of Ferrara speaker of the poem, which gives us to believe that the duke has arrogant, controlling, and jealous traits. Beginning of the poem reads “That’s my Last Duchess painted on the wall, Looking as if she were alive (Browning 1078).” We immediately believe duchess is no longer alive. Robert Browning clever as he is used these lines to capture the readers attention, so us readers can start assuming what happen to the duke duchess before finishing the poem. Looking at the first two lines again what we can take from the tone is duke of Ferrara portrayed his duchess as if she has nothing more than external appearances. Just these two lines show readers that duke of Ferrara was a arrogant human being. In mid-sixteenth century when the Renaissance was a time dissolute men like the duke exercised absolute power. Duke was a controlling powerful person in his time that’s why he didn’t like the way his duchess always was talkative to many people, “ She thanked men-good! But thanked somehow- I know not how- as if she ranked my gift of a nine-hundred-years-old name with anybody gift (Browning 1079).” This was a way the duke can musings diatribe on her unwell being of behavior. These were claims by duke himself that his duchess was flirting with everyone and did not appreciated the gift of his nine hundred year old name. Duke of Ferrara jealously grew and grew, “Who'd stoop to blame
