The Power of Culture

That is true culture which helps us to work for the social betterment of all. Henry Ward Beecher Nowadays we have many problems. There is a lot of unemployment, people are mostly concerned about their living. Some have already lost hopes for the future. Every day we hear that there is no money for culture and education. But what will happen if our future is in the hands of people without culture and values? Our life will certainly be less interesting and colourful, and maybe more dangerous and miserable. Because, as once W. Somerset Maugham said, “The end of culture is right living.” I also believe that if we want to live in a better world, with beauty and values, only true culture can help us. But does it have the power to do so? It is not as vital for life as food, for example. It is not as aggressive as war, either. It is sometimes even hidden, invisible. And perhaps exactly this fact makes it so powerful and able to change us all. Because it affects not our body, but our mind and soul. It makes people develop new and better ideas. So, if we are in touch with it, it can definitely make us feel better, think better, behave better. And if it is real, it can last forever. A perfect example of this is our Bulgarian culture. It is more than thirteen centuries old and continues to give the world brilliant examples of music, dances, men of great achievements. Why is it so powerful? First, maybe, because it is unique and that’s why interesting to other cultures. And second, because it speaks the universal language of beauty, love and humanity. Having these ideas I mind I recently entered a postcard exchange project with students in Tasmania.We are going to share information about history and culture of our countries.
