The Positivity of Hope Jennifer Mullen Composition 1/English 1001 The Positivity of Hope Let me start by saying, I’m human, I fall prey to human emotions, especially the emotion of hope. My definition of hope is it’s a belief that things that happen in the future will have a positive outcome. I feel that life without hope is meaningless; some people feel differently. I’ve had people say to me, that having hope in something is setting myself up for a let-down. That, all the wait, the constant hoping, brings pain. It brings pain from the waiting, pain from the anticipation and worry. It brings pain from the deep disappointment, when hoping for something seems to look futile. So, I guess the question would be, “is it worth putting ourselves through?” We’ve all had things we have hoped for, but never attained. Does that mean we’re clinging onto something that’s not meant to be ours, something that will never happen? How different is hope from luck, illusion, or gambling? Not much different at all, I think. But for myself, hope sustains me; it gets me through the day. Without hope, I’m not sure how I could exist. As the parent of a child with a terminal illness, hope is a part of my every day; it sustains me and keeps me going. Hope is that my praying for a miracle will happen someday. Hope is there, when wishing for a cure. Hope is believing that my child will have more good days than bad. Hope for me is a day when she experiences no pain or discomfort. It is waking up in the morning, getting her out of bed, and seeing the radiant smile on her face. Hope for me is…one more hour, one more day, of having this wonderful blessing in my life. Hope is empowering. I see people every day, with no light in their eyes, no hope. When I see someone like this, I always smile and say hello, hoping maybe by acknowledging them positively, it might give them just a little
