Art and life At the preface, Oscar Wilde said that diversity of opinion about a work of art shows that the work is new, complex and vital. Author may try to prapare for the misunderstanding of this work. At the same time, I have a feeling of release to write something. In daily life, when someone ask me about the attitude towards a piece of music or a painting, I often give no answer. Maybe I lack of the insight into niceness. However, Oscar’s words encourage me to say something about art and life. I can’t find the clear definition of art. Someone agrees that art is something which is derived from life and more than life. This opinion shows the relationship between life and art. So this book is the art which reflect the author’s life, even the society which the author lived in. 1. the characters As a book, the picture of Dorian Gray is a work of art. The author uses a lot of flowers speech to show us the story. Through this story, we benefits a lot. As a painting, the picture of Dorian Gray itself is a work of art. The painter is the incarnation of the author. In his eyes, art is beauty and beyond everything. It reminds us of the author’s estheticism. The painter, artist and writer, all of their works show nothing but their own thoughts and feelings. While the content of works is only the way to express themselves. Therefore, what Basil drew is not so much Dorian Gray as the ideal of perfect personality. Basil stands for artist, while the picture stands for art and ideal. The change of the picture means the shattered of the painter’s ideal. Lord Henry represents reality which is oppsite to art. Many readers hate Lord Henry very much because he misled Dorian and push Dorian into a bottomless abyss. However, I like Lord Henry. He is the man who is the closest to the reality.
