The People for the American Way are an organization that was founded in 1981 by Norman Lear, Barbara Jordan, Father Theodore Hesburgh, and Andrew Heiskell. The members of this organization think that the “American way” is individuality, freedom of thought, expression and religion, a sense of community, and tolerance and compassion for others. They want people to know that they still matter in our society. They also want to strengthen the common cords that connect the people as humans and citizens (“Our”). They think that this act threatens the rights of women by attacking choice and preventive care. They think that reproductive freedom is preventive care and can save lives. The members of this organization think that reproductive freedom is about empowering women to take care of their bodies however they want to. They don’t think any woman should be denied contraception or abortion because politicians have taken it upon themselves to make personal decisions for them. They don’t think a woman can be denied care because of her financial status. They think that public funding for family planning is critical. The Title X Abortion Provider Prohibition Act would shut doors to Title X clinics when they are very important. Women also rely on Title X programs for not only abortions but for cancer screenings, annual exams, contraceptive services, and testing and treating sexually transmitted infections. President Obama has prioritized the program. He has recently requested a $9.9 million increase, which would now be $327.4 million. The People for the American Way think this bill is a direct attack on legitimate family planning providers, such as Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood plays a critical role for millions of women all over the country. The President of People for the American Way, Michael Keegan says this is very critical healthcare for millions of low income women. He thinks that if the Republican Party was really interested in preventing unplanned pregnancies, they would be more supportive of organizations that provide affordable contraception. Keegan said that if they Republican Party are interested in public health, they would also be more interested in helping women defend themselves against diseases.
