Chapter Two: The Parallel and Distributed Brain Josh Patterson 12/1/13 The author starts this chapter with the analogy of the scene from the movie the Men in Black where it the human brain is opened only to find a small alien inside with controls that lead one to believe that indeed there is an inner operator inside of us that controls our every actions and our behaviors. It was first believed that there we were born hard wired and ready to go. It was believed that mortality and intelligence were innate, and like the internet, us as humans had no boss. It was believed that we were hardwired with millions of choices and decisions that the brain allowed us to make choices dependent upon the situation. According to this, scientists believed that certain areas of the brain were responsible for different actions. This lead to the study of the spots or bumps on the brain known as phrenology. A well-known scientist by the name of Florens believed that certain areas of the brain were responsible for different activities. He suggested that the cerebellum was responsible for coordination. To add to this theory, another scientist by the name of Broca completed a study with a patient named Tan. Tan had a syphilitic lesion on the left side of his brain specifically in the frontal lobe. This area of the brain is known for speech. It was with additional studies that he did prove that this area of the brain was responsible for speech, and later this part of the brain became known as the Broca area. He and other researchers determined that different parts of the brain were indeed responsible for different activities. Jackson is well known for his research on the cerebral cortex. His wife began having seizures which convinced him to conduct further research. His findings lead him to discover that different areas of the brain would react differently and thus he concluded that
