This leads to "women viewing their bodies as a never-ending project, with the goal of appearing as a younger woman" (Martens, in class). The more women are expected to appear youthful, the more society pushes these beauty standards which in turn perpetuates the issue and allows skin care companies to continue profiting off an abundance of anti-aging skin care products. Not only are these skin care products often expensive, they are almost exclusively targeted towards women rather than for both women and men. This perpetuates the double-standards of beauty for women and men. Men are not expected to purchase such products and are often praised for their aging, leading them to not having to worry about their skin or appearance as they age, while women continue to fork out money to meet unrealistic
“It is not enough to say that women are being sold a lie by advertising, magazines and cinema” (Page 30-31) This is probably the most painfully obvious reason as to why women in today’s society strive themselves on looing like something that horrifically opposite to them. This contributes greatly on their health and lifestyle. Women go through so much effort to change themselves. For example: Botox, facelifts, pretty much anything that to them, they would think ‘enhances’ their appearance. On another note, it is very rarely would you see an Australian woman go to the extreme to idolize a particular celebrity and clone their appearance and lifestyle.
For instance, some of the celebrities such as Goldie Hawn and Greta Van Susteren may look astonishing for their age, but what the media fails to portray is the fact that their natural, youthful appearance is anything but natural at all. According to Bordo, she points out that Susan Surandon looked older in Thelma and Louise than she does in her movies today. Cosmetic surgery has been a known yet hidden secret of celebrities for years. Nevertheless, Bordo clarifies that cosmetic procedures are becoming a common procedure for many non-celebrities today who wish to prolong or create unblemished looks. She tries to get this point across by stating that "Aging beautifully used to mean wearing one's years with style, confidence, and vitality.
Some also cut themselves, drink or abuse drugs to cope. But many are adept at hiding their depression, he says. “From the outside, they may look popular and fabulous, but deep down, they may feel so bad about themselves.” Ho’s young patients don’t use the word “depression,” he says. “But they will say that they feel bad all the time and don’t see the point in doing anything. Or some of them feel that they are a disappointment to their parents, so they don’t actually feel depressed, but
The first such way is to ignore any legitimate concerns women have; the second way is to classify any emotion as unnecessary and “irrational.” Women get taken advantage of solely because society has considered them emotional, which in today’s modern society is often mistaken for being unstable. This in turn affects a women’s status in life. With this in mind, it is the status that will ultimately define their social mobility, “the lower the status, the more manner of seeing and feeling is subjected to being discredited, and the less believable it becomes” (Hochschile 173). Society has usually seen the lower class as unintelligent and therefore have their opinions denigrated. Even if she has a legitimate case to voice an opinion, “a person of lower status has a weaker claim to the right to define what is going on; less
Medea is alienated by society because she is an intelligent, foreign, powerful woman. The first reason Medea is shunned is her gender. In the patriarchal society of Ancient Greece, femininity is a faux pas on its own. On top of being a woman, though, she is clever and intelligent; these qualities were not admirable in a woman of her time. King Creon states that “a sharp tempered woman, or for that matter a man, is easier to deal with than the clever type who hold her tongue.” Medea is, in fact, clever enough to hold her tongue and stay quiet.
Many would say “if something isn't broken there is no need to fix it,” while on the other hand in today’s society countless models and celebrities in the public eye are displaying more cosmetic beauty than natural beauty. It could be argued that cosmetic beauty allows women to be different, confident, and hide imperfections while with natural beauty
Response After reading “Don’t Let Stereotypes Warp Your Judgment” by Robert L. Heilbroner, I have to say that I strongly agree on what he said about stereotyping being a negative aspect that causes us to be confused about this world. In the society that we live in today, it is impossible for us to not stereotype others whether it’s for personal reasons, marketing strategy, or even protecting ourselves from danger. For most people, stereotyping is a bad habit that they just can’t get rid of due to the influence of others or the influence of social media. Heilbroner said that, “Stereotypes are a kind of gossip about the world, a gossip that makes us prejudge people before we ever lay eyes on them.” We often times find it easier to go along with what people are stereotyping about others as a way to secure our social status. Put yourself in the shoes of someone who just transferred from another school.
Meanwhile, these advertisements would also mislead the young customers, because the message that advertising sends to the girls is the main qualification for a woman to get a better job or to have a brighter future is the way she looks. Furthermore, in those advertisements and pictures Fair and Lovely are using photo touch-up techniques to justify
Modeling along with social media give girls the impression that they have to fit this idealized image to look thin and be beautiful, dress up nicely, and wear makeup or they will not be happy with themselves. The pressure to look a certain way has psychological effects on young girls. Changing the way they dress or eat changes and influences their identity. Unfortunately, womanizing photographers exist in the modeling industry; young girls are scared to speak up if their uncomfortable with how everything is going. No matter what their age may be,
