The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was an important act because it ended segregation and gave equal rights to all citizens of the United States. In 1963, The Civil Rights bill was brought before Congress. Kennedy pointed out an important fact to show his support for the act. “In a speech on television on June 11th, Kennedy pointed out: ‘The Negro baby born in America today has about one-half as much chance of completing high school as a white baby born in the same place on the same day. They would have one third as much chance of completing college, one third as much chance of becoming a professional man, twice as much chance of becoming unemployed, and about one-seventh as much chance of earning $10,000 a year.
How far do you agree with the statement that the position of black Americans changes little during the period 1945-1955? It may be argued that during the period 1945-55 the position of the black Americans changed unnoticeable, yet there had been certain factors that in longer term resulted in improving the position of white Americans in a big scale. The improvements consisted of army. Truman desegregated the armed forces in 1948 and appointed the first black federal judge. This meant that the American workers left their jobs to join the army, which created many job opportunities for black Americans, which were needed especially in the defence industries, which now grew in importance as they had to make supplies for the Army such as guns and tanks.
Diversity works to change the culture of that organization. Diversity realizes the value in a mixture of varying cultures, backgrounds, and experiences. So, instead of accomplishing the diversity of college students admitted, it is acting as reverse discrimination. What is affirmative action though; it is the practice, which emerged in the 1960s as a result of efforts by the civil rights movement to get America to honor its original contract, that "all (people)are created equal." This process is done usually by institutions of giving preference to racial minorities or women when hiring, giving awards, or deciding whom to admit.
“Diversity” Definition Group Essay A word that quickly sums up what colleges strive for yet for which they also fall short is the word diversity. It is a word that goes hand in hand with multiculturalism. Since the number of minorities admitted into universities has fallen, universities have begun searching for the top students from different cultures to accept into their schools. This is called diversity and it is going to effectively create a better future with the help of a multicultural generation of bright young students from each and every culture. A perfect example of diversity in college is the amount of clubs and programs available.
Like the African Americans, all other minority groups have faced hostility in America but unlike the blacks, they have been able to uplift themselves from a socio-economic perspective. For example, the Orientals are one of the most successful racial groups in America today. They have the second highest level of education and twenty five percent of Orientals are professional workers unlike the general population which is only fifteen percent. This socioeconomic success by the Orientals does not mean that they have not faced their share of problems, which other minorities have faced. An example of this is the Alien Exclusion Act which prohibited Orientals from owning property in California if they weren’t citizens.
Parents spend a lot of money for their son or daughter to better them through higher education. Alcohol directly causes that investment to be wasted away. “Alcohol consumption before and during final exam period is detrimental to students’ performance. The effect is particularly significant for the highest-performing students, according to the study” (Daily Princetonian Staff) this quote explains how alcohol consumption is directly associated with failing grades, even in usually high performing students. The quote came from a study taken during finals week at a college.
Specifically for African Americans, the equality and desegregation under this act of education, the workplace, and voter’s registration has been tremendously empowering. One of the great things about America that many other countries do not have is free education. Under Plessy v. Ferguson, segregation of schools was legalized under the conditions that it was separate but equal. During that time, the schools were definitely separated, but unquestionably unequal. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 overturned Plessy V. Ferguson which not only led to African Americans having better schools, but also allowed them to learn with their Caucasian peers.
How far had racial equality been achieved by 1965? The Civil Rights campaign was put in place in order to end racial discrimination and to open up equality to black citizens in the United States. Campaigning tactics included non-violent protesting, civil disobedience and legal action through courts. By doing so they would be improving the lives of millions, but in order to achieve this goal they had to meet the basic needs of black American's. In order for racial equality to exist, African Americans must feel as though their needs had been met.
In the Obama vs. McCain election of 2012, Obama’s victory was strengthened by the fact that there was a much higher turnout of the young voters and voters that are parts of minority groups. Whereas, a great amount of Republican voters abstained for different reasons. This is a practical example of Differential Abstention and how it can affect general elections. To conclude, it can be shown that differential abstention can play a large part in who will win in any election, as shown by Obama in 2008. There are many reasons as to why people abstain from voting, starting from it being too cold outside and ranging to people not bothering to go out and
