Although this crafty hero has many other great qualities, these qualities are the highlights of his character. Odysseus’s best quality, in my opinion, is his sneaky cleverness. Odysseus is always thinking, and he shows it numerous times throughout his adventures. One of his most crafty plans, on page 225, was when he tied himself and all of his men to the Cyclops’s ram’s bellies and escaped from the Cyclops into their ship. Polyphemus, the Cyclops, didn’t sense that the Odysseus and the men were hiding, and when he let is rams free, the crew escaped.
Every time in the story as he encounters the problem in the way the God helps him. It is hard to compare the qualities between the great hero and me; somehow I have qualities similar and different then him. Heroes are people who saved the people. The main character in the Homers epic poem, Odysseus possesses heroic qualities, such as bravery, wisdom, a strategic thinking, courageous, strength, cleaver, extravagant curiosity, and honorable. As in the story when he escapes from Cyclops cave he showed that he was brave and a great strategist when he poked Cyclops eye with pike of olive, he decided not to kill him because if he killed Cyclops, he would not be able to get out of the cave.
This lack of self-centeredness is observed through the actions of Hector throughout the entire epic and his compassion for others is prominent in his notion of Greek justice. When Hector firsts steps into the plot of the Iliad, we witness his passion to fight and protect his city. In fact, Hector calls out his brother for not fighting. If Paris had not taken Helen as his prize, then this war may have never occurred. In book three, after Paris’ responds to Hector’s criticisms, Paris offers to prove himself in a fight with Menelaus in order to settle the war.
Odysseus has to keep himself and his crew from being lulled to sleep by the Sirens’ singing. “But I, with my sharp blade, cut into bits a great round cake of wax; I kneaded these with my stout hands. The wax grew soft, gave way before my force and Helios’ warm rays. I sealed the ears of all my crew in turn. That done, they bound my hands and feet, as I stood upright on the mast box; and they tied the ropes hard fast round the mast.” (Homer 242) In order to keep his crew from succumbing to the music of the Sirens, Odysseus chops up and shapes pieces of beeswax to put in the ears of his crewmen, so that they cannot hear the music.
Odysseus was the first one to realize that if they had killed the Cyclops they would be trapped in the cave forever. “If we kill him now, we may be trapped inside this cave forever.” (Homer 7) Odysseus knows that actions always have positives and negatives, so he thought of the harm that would create if he killed the Cyclops so he waited. As Odysseus’s intelligence grows his knowledge of speech grows too. When the Cyclops, Polyphemus, asks Odysseus his name, he replied in a very sneaky, intelligent way. “Nobody, that is the name my father gave me: Nobody.” (Homer 8) Odysseus was able to
Noel Mendez Mendez 1 Mrs. Hinton English 3Period 2 August 31, 2012 Epic Hero Beowulf achieved many quest of tremendous value to himself and society. In the Epic From Beowulf translated by Burton Raffel, Beowulf did something that many people aren’t capable of doing. Homer utilizes Alliteration consistently through the epic poem, thus in result helps the theme in the text stick out more clearly. The use of Alliteration puts emphasis on the fact that there are many obstacles in which our hero must put his life and emotions on the line in order to make his way home. Odysseus has an encounter with the great monster Scylla whom is said by all common folk that if you were unlucky enough to come upon her, no god could save you. “Down the dark sea tide. Three times from dawn to dusk she spews it up….” (Homer 1232).

The Poseidon movie presented a survival story. The story focused more on the action than on the humanity of the situation. character development; each person was assign a given personality that never faltered and often times created great conflict as they made their way through the bowels of the capsized S.S.
