The novel is presented in the form of one man’s dialogue. Discuss the effect of this narrative structure. Mohsin Hamid creates a narrative structure in the form of a singular dialogue in the novel ‘The Reluctant Fundamentalist’. The protagonist in the book Changez is the only voice the readers hear, and despite the very prominent presence of the American, he remains voiceless. The format forces the reader to consider the non-American view in regards to stereotypes, terrorism and nationalism as well as the prejudice experienced by ethnic people around the world. It also raises questions to the reliability of Changez’ narration as the reader receives everything through the voice of Changez. All of these factors create an underlying theme of ambiguity that is consistent throughout the entire novel. Rather than writing using a traditional novel structure, Hamid chooses to use the form of a dramatic monologue to tell the reader Changez’ story. Although the initial meeting between Changez and the American is portrayed to be accidental, the nature of it implies there is much more meaning behind it. Changez seems to have much to tell the American and is very meaningful in what he says; he attempts to send a clear message to the American through his story. Also the American is very willing to listen to a complete stranger for an entire afternoon and puts up with the constant barrage of insults; “illiterate barbarians.” Changez outlines his background in Pakistan and how he received “among the top exam results” and was not “poor” but neither “rich”. In fact, his past life relates to the future of all American lives, that is, a “decaying aristocracy.” Changez initially states that he is “a lover of America”, and upon him first arriving on it shoes, this many have been true.
