In Chapter 16, Hosseini uses voice narrative to tell the story of Rahim Khan and Hassan in order to fill in the missing puzzle pieces. The chapter sees Rahim Khan take over Amir’s narrative and tell the story by referring to his first hand account of events. Hosseini does this in order to show an alternate point of view, though the account is still largely bias, it offers new perspective for the reader and adds to the exciting intensity of the chapter. Hosseini portrays Rahim Khan’s voice narrative as seemingly more wise due to the religious connotations and old fashioned manner, which contrasts greatly of that of Amir’s in previous chapters. Although, both Amir and Rahim Khan tell their stories in a formal manner.
Author O’Brian also confuses the reader by writing his novel as if everything that was told took place in the real world. For example, just by saying “this is true” (64) doesn’t always make it true. O’Brian leaves it up to the reader to distinct what they see the story as: reality or fiction. It is said that “a true war story… makes the stomach believe” (74). Author and character O’Brian tell the story in such a way to make it believable that the two different people are really the same person.
These symbols throughout the story include the old mans eye, the heartbeat and the contradiction between love and hate in which I will be talking about in this paper. When reading Edgar Allan Poe’s, “The Tell-Tale Heart”, it is more easily understood as a figurative text rather than a literal text. A literal reading of this story would make it very difficult to understand the details. By taking this story literally it is not easy to understand the entire meaning and representation of the story. In the beginning of the story, the narrator describes the old man’s eye.
O'Brien creates an intentional paradox for his readers when he writes the violent, but grabbing story of Rat Kiley and then at the end of the story, tells the reader that the characters and events of the story did not happen just as he described them, but that they happened in a totally different way to other people. But he insists that the story is true. With this, O'Brien challenges the reader to discover the truth of the event. O'Brien gets the reader to figure out what fiction of this book is actually worth. Firstly, did O'Brien confuse the reader when he said that the events did not happen after the reader became involved in those events?
Through the surface of the narration from Tim O’Brien, the reader witnesses sort of a confusing and hard to grasp idea. By using many quotes, statistics, and descriptive details Clarke makes the writing complete. It’s as if he gives a little taste of everything, but that miniscule amount is sufficient to feed one’s imagination. Clarke really makes a homerun, his purpose to demonstrate how well Kennedy’s speech was and how/why it was successful, also to demonstrate the genuine president that Kennedy was; in which he clearly accomplishes. Personally never paid much attention to any president’s speech nor wanted to read it, but after reading “Why JFK’s Inaugural Succeeded”, the motivation and very enthusiasm to read Kennedy’s speech was unavoidable. Amazingly an author can really engage his/her audience, but that really takes a lot.
As I Lay Dying The novel As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner tends to make readers confused when beginning to read it due to the theme the book entails. One of the main themes in the novel would have to be the difference of what are the truth and the explanation of what is true. Without a doubt any point is able to end in a massive amount of what is biased due to the different characters and their individual point of views. Each thought they have on what they believe true is dependent on their previous outlooks and thoughts. With that being said anything that is alleged can’t always necessarily be the truth.
The Things They Carried In The Things They carried, a novel about several war stories, Tim O’Brian refers to two different kinds of truths. One of these truths is called happening truth, which he describes as not always being able to get the point across. The second truth is the story truth. This truth is able to place an assortment of images into the reader’s head which make them feel almost exactly what the character in the story is going through. By telling the happening truth, the author is only able to describe to the readers what the character is going through and the majority of the time just telling a story does not make the readers understand what the characters are feeling at that moment.
With all these details of morality and value already given, what does the introduction of John add? Simply put, he adds context. Being a satire, Brave New World is fairly ludicrous. Without the inclusion of a truly human character for the reader to identify with, Huxley's message would have remained strictly theoretical but John's reaction to the moral decay he sees around him parallels that of the reader. He is, more or less, a placement of the reader within the novel's setting.
