the hard lesson learned in life | k simkoff | the hard lesson learned in life | k simkoff | The theme of the short story “The Necklace”, written by Guy de Maupassant is to be happy with the things you have and the person you are.The theme in a story is a representation of the idea behind the story.( Clugston-2010) Although Madame Loisel was considered to be middle class she wanted so badly to live in upper social class. She wanted to live above her middle class means. She was so determined to do so, she would do whatever it took for her to be able to get where she wanted to be in society. Her husband just so happened to be given an invitation to a prominent reception, this is where Matilde thought she would be able to get her foot in the door of the upper class. She coaxed her husband into buying her a beautiful new dress to help her fit into such a special occasion. He was not very happy about it because he would have to use the francs he had saved to buy a gun to go hunting with his friends. But reluctantly gave in. The Matilde borrowed a necklace from Madame Forestier, which was work thirty six thousand francs to complete her ensamble for the reception. The funny thing is, the one thing that made her so happy and she thought it would get her accepted into high society was the necklace, in the end that very thing brings her back down into the real world because she loses the necklace and has to pay to have it replaced. She had to work for ten straight years to get the necklace paid off. By this time she had fallen from her middle class status into poverty. Therefor she spends the rest of her life working and living in poverty because she was trying to live in the high social class than she belonged. “ Symbolism is something that has a literal identity” (Clugston-2010) The necklace is a symbolism of her being accepted into a higher
