When Liddy fell pregnant I was shocked. Liddy’s character showed that she was determined not to have a teenage pregnancy like what happened to her mother. Liddy said “I feel sorry for my Mum having to bring me up on her own”, Liddy getting pregnant shocked me because she didn’t seem that kind of girl. Typically, a husband who can’t consummate a marriage should be abandoned without hesitation. When Bertrande is “urged by her relatives to separate from Martin, she firmly refuse[s]” (28). This decision reveals Bertrande’s “certain character traits…a concern for her reputation as a woman, a stubborn independence” (28). Bertrande cleverly calculates the advantages she possesses as a result of Martin’s incompetence. “Her refusal to have her marriage dissolved…freed her temporarily from certain wifely duties…gave her a chance to have a girlhood” (28).
Why didn’t she get out of the relationship right away? Could have this been prevented? Of course, it is impossible for me to get all the answers to these questions because Yeardley Love is dead. Her life was taken by someone that she had once been in a relationship with before. Although I’m not sure of why the couple broke up, I know that she was right by trying to escape a relationship like that, but she should have spoken up about it.

This differs from how Lily acts because Lily relies on others to help make her happy. One of the reasons that June does not want to marry Neil is because she does not want to admit that she might actually need him. She is afraid of letting someone know that she needs them because the last time she fell in love he left her. “Ever since Melvin Edwards backed out of your wedding all those years back, you’ve been afraid of love, refusing to take a chance” (211). August knows that June is afraid to fall in love again because the last man that she fell in love with left her.
The roaring twenties was the beginning to a decade of a whole new caliber. The dawn of the American Dream; the idea of a wealthy, comfortable, luxurious lifestyle. F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel “The Great Gatsby” best shows how people strive for the American Dream and the means by which they attain it. Both Tom Buchanan and Jay Gatsby are able to live a luxurious lifestyle. However Tom is able to enjoy spending money left and right knowing the he acquired it through inheritance while Jay struggles to acquire his wealth by any means possible.
