The Nationalists began the war of 1936-39 with clear advantages that explain their ultimate victory. How far do you agree with this statement? * Weakness of left/republic. * International involvement * Strengths of Franco * Military strengths – African army. In the 1930s, Spain was a deeply divided country that was politically torn between right-wing Nationalist and left-wing Republican parties. The Nationalist party was made up of monarchists, landowners, employers, the Roman Catholic Church and the army. The Republicans consisted of the workers, the trade unions, socialists and peasants. Arguably, there are many reasons toward the Nationalists beginning the war in a better position than the republicans This includes, lack of republican support ( mostly in army), strengths of General Franco and impressive military strength and International involvement from Germany and Italy which enabled the Nationalists to have a better quality of resources than the Republicans which gave them a boost into war. Foreign reaction and military strength to the civil war benefited the Nationalists much more than it did the Republicans. Primarily, this was because the Nationalists gained from the Non-intervention pact of 1936-39. On one hand, Britain and France refused to aid the Republicans and, on the other hand, they failed to stop German and Italian aid reaching the nationalists. Italian and German assistance was crucial in the early part of the war which arguably set the Nationalists up with a clear advantage. Their aircraft saved the Nationalists from a possible early defeat by airlifting the Army of Africa to the mainland to reinforce Mola’s rebellion.
