Explain the mood in European capitals upon the outbreak war in august 1914. Account for both similarities and differences. All the sources we draw the knowledge from belong to respected writers and philosophers that tell about the mood through out Europe upon the outbreak of the First World War. These stories are told through memories that are older than a decade and yet they are so vivid and overwhelmed with emotions as if they happened just recently. This fact testifies just how the beginning of such an event was ravishing and even revolutionary for the mind of the common man in the early 20th century. War was welcomed with cheers and adventures spirit as of a brief excursion to wilderness; even most of those who were considered intellectuals of their time were swept of their feet by the idea of war as stated by Bertrand Russell, a distinguished mathematician and philosopher. Bertrand Russell was also a strong pacifist and one of the rare that remained a realistic and was not tempted by the idea of war. He was able to foresee some of the devastating consequences that the war will bring, but no one was able to even guess what the final result would be. Berlin may have been the only capital that experienced some opposition to the war, such was organized by the Berlin Social Democrats but was quickly over shouted by the hoards of “fire-eaters” as stated by Philipp Scheidemann; simply, everyone wanted war. This generation that new very little of war and sacrifice couldn’t understand the global ramifications of what was ahead. According to Roland Doregeles, in Paris all became one; the euphoria of war incorporated even the most silent and hidden of us into the masses. Jews, Poles, Catholics were now all united under one roof to fight for the same cause, for something they saw as a grand and courageous ideal, for their country; the feel of patriotism was now grater
