The Montessori Method In the early 20th century Dr. Maria Montessori developed and perfected the Montessori Method of education. With this new and improved method of education the traditional ways of education were changed for the followers and believers of Maria Montessori. She believed that students could learn anything if they were given the proper tools and environment to learn in. After reviewing the characteristics of the Montessori website and reading the section provided in our book I believe the Montessori Method is an effective form of education. Dr. Montessori developed this type of learning to promote self control of the students in many ways. Students are given the opportunity to have self-control in their educational path. The Montessori website states that, “Our classrooms are designed to promote self-direction and self-discipline, to allow children to create their own substantive body of knowledge through exploration and observation, following their own interests at their own pace. Highly qualified teachers — we call them “directors” and “directresses” — observe and offer guidance and support while children build their cognitive and creative abilities. The result? Children who are engaged and interested in learning, and eager to advance.” This education stresses the point in allowing students to be interested and eager to learn which allows students to succeed in the chosen subject with flying colors. Students study the topic or subject they find interesting. They also create their own pace to master the subject that’s being studied. Teachers guide them through their learning and help them stay on track. Montessori schools also emphasizes that students should be able to learn in a comfortable habitat and be provided with tools that are necessary for success.
