The Monkeyface Chronicles By: Richard Scarsbrook The Monkeyface Chronicles is a White Pine Award winning novel written by Richard Scarsbrook. Richard Scarsbrook has had his fiction and poetry published in numerous literary journals, magazines, and anthologies. Cheeseburger Subversive, his first book in the Dak Sifter series, was a finalist for the 2004 CLA Young Adult Book Award, and was nominated for the Ontario Library Association’s White Pine Award. Featherless Bipeds, the sequel to Cheeseburger Subversive, was short-listed for the 2007 CLA Young Adult Book of the Year Award and the 2009 Stellar Book Award. Scarsbrook lives in Toronto, Ontario. The story takes place in Fairville, Ontario. The story is written by the First Person’s point of view, as seen through the eyes of the main character Philip Skyler. This story begins during the month of September, as we all know as the starting of the school year. Thirteen year old Philip Skyler learned early in his life that his face was going to get him into trouble and that there was nothing he could do about it. Born with an extreme facial deformity, Philip was an easy target for stares, sneers, and bullying. Though medical scientist named his condition Van der Woude syndrome, his classmates-especially the bullies preferred to call him “Monkeyface”. School has been really tough for thirteen year old Philip Skyler and he thinks life will always be tough as it is all because of the way he looks. We all know how tough school is especially when you’re bullied. However it is harder on Philip when he is always being picked on even by the good kids in the school.
