The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari Summary: In this chapter, Julian Mantle explains the symbol of this fable. The garden stands for the mind. In other words, reading this chapter is like reading about the potential of thoughts. Accordingly, taking care of a garden becomes synonymous to nurturing the mind. Julian’s main thesis is that to have a healthy mind that allow us to be strong, smart and to think positively, one need to gain mastery over it. To achieve this ultimate goal, the protagonist prescribes three main pieces of advice. The first is called “The Heart of The Rose”, which is a daily exercise of looking at a rose, fixing its details without losing concentration. You have to practice this exercise in a silent place by thinking just in the positive sides that contains. This advice has a benefit which is that either your mind will control you or you will control it. The second piece of advice is called “Opposition Thinking”. This consists in driving negative thoughts and trying to be positive whenever one falls into a bad mood. This step allows the mind to create miracles “A strong, disciplined mind, which anyone can cultivate through daily practice, can achieve miracles” (63). The third piece of advice is “The Secret of The Lake”. The latter is about visualizing dreams as if they were real. This technique has the power of attracting dreams into the realm of reality. In addition to this, Julian Mantle maintains that doing what one loves to do in life and attached to it, he/ she has more energy in reading and applying our goals and it is also the key to happiness.
