The Mind and Motivation of a SERIAL KILLER Serial killers are sexually dysfunctional and have low self-esteem. Serial killers generally murder strangers to cool off or to calm down. They are twisted in nature. Some return to the place the murder happened to fantasize about their deeds. Serial killers have made many excuses for their killings. Henry Lucas blamed his upbringing, Jeffrey Dahmer blamed his family, Ted Bundy said pornography made him do it, Herbert Mullin blamed the voices in his head that told him it was time to "sing the die song", and John Wayne Gacy turned the blame around and said the victims deserved to die. But why exactly do serial killers like to murder people? Psychiatrists and FBI agents have tried to get inside the killers mind for many many years. Some explanations include childhood abuse, genetics, chemical imbalances, brain injuries and exposure to traumatic events. In true psychopathic fashion, serial killers are blaming someone else for their actions. If their bad childhood is the reason for killing people, then why don't their siblings also become serial killers? Are serial killers insane? Or are they born this way? Serial killers will do just about anything to convince the judge of their insanity, if they are declared “legally insane” they can avoid jail or death row. Serial killers usually come from troubled or broken homes. Some are abused by their parents and often grew up in orphanage. Many times there is a family history of mental illness, alcoholism and criminal behavior. They are often the victims of psychological, sexual or physical abuse. This abuse can result in feelings of intimidation, embarrassment and helplessness. They grow up resenting their absent or abusive fathers and tend to transfer these feelings to other or all men.
