The Meeting The Meeting is a short story written by the Indian author Shama Futehally. The short story is about how the thing you want the most sometimes ends up being the thing you want the least. The author has used her own knowledge about Indian girls and women to describe a very believable Indian women/girl and family. In this story we meet Sakina. Sakina is the main character in the story. Sakina is a not so young Indian unmarried girl. Sakina is described in the story as being 29, fat, unattractive, and looks like a nanny. She has been getting up later and later every morning. In spite of the fact that she is 29 years old Sakina is still very much a child. She has never been married and therefore she has never been forced to grow up and become an adult. Sakina knows her life will never change, and that knowledge is probably what is causing her to get up later and later every morning. Sakina does not appear to have any friends and therefore she probably spends a lot of time being alone. She dreams that one day a handsome man will ring the door and propose to her, but every time the door bell rings she knows it will not be a proposal. Sakina has a slight fear of her father, because he is always very cruel to her. She doesn´t feel like she is her father's equal. Her father is an educated man, who used to be a professor at the university. The father is always mocking Sakina and he speaks to Sakina in English to diminish her and make her feel stupid. He is not described as a very kind father. The father is described as being the lion and Sakina is the gazelle. In other words the father is the predator and Sakina is the animal of pray.
