Honors Literature 1 February 2013 Brave New World and 2081: When Government = All Power Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World and Kurt Vonnegut’s 2081 both display themes that portray complete government control through the manipulation of individuals and their surroundings. While the novel Brave New World and the video 2081 similarly convey the idea of equality, they differentiate when expressing the concept of community. In Brave New World, the society is controlled by the government through hypnopedic teachings and each person is assigned their lifelong path. Any person found to be overly intelligent is not accepted in society because of their uniqueness. Similarly, in the movie 2081, if people are found smarter then most, they have to wear ‘handicaps’ to prevent them from thinking for themselves, being creative, or thinking too much.
Mrs. Ellen does not abuse her governmental power because she sticks with Dave and trusts him that he will not abuse his governmental power while he is the temporary president of the United States. During the movie they hide Bill Mitchell in the white house basement because they feel like it is the best decision if the United States people do not know how major his stroke is. This is misusing their governmental power because the government should have told the United States people about his incident. The movie criticizes the importance of governmental power by underestimating the importance of government. The people in the movie did not take being part of the government very seriously and that is why all of this mishap happened to begin with.
One political policy that was a major success were the newly developed Basic laws. These were introduced to try remove any remaining Nazi or was legacies. One of the Basic laws was that a new political parliament known as the Bundestag was to be set up. This created a democracy in West Germany. This was successful because Safe guards were put in place to ensure that no one could ever take all power as Hitler Did when he was President of the post war Reichstag.
“The US system of checks and balances is ineffective” Discuss The Founding Fathers feared tyranny and dictatorship so decided to follow the Montesquieu theory of the separation of powers, and extend it to the constitutional system of checks and balances. The USA was a new country throwing off what it saw as the tyranny of the British King and Parliament. It therefore made sure the President was not a king and that Congress was also limited in its powers, with regard to president, states and Constitution. All the branches of government are in theory limited by each other. The Purpose of the constitution was to limit the power of government and give freedom and opportunity to citizens.
We find the author hinting at democratic ideals over the monarchs that were common in his time. While the theme of moral law vs. political law is a central theme, the democratic undertones of this show a more subtle theme that is not immediately apparent. Creon, King of Thebes makes the burying of Antigone’s brother a crime against the state. In this time period the king’s word was law, he had ultimate power in the matters of state. This type of power was intended to make the process of decision making faster and more decisive.
Summary & Response In "Masters of Desire: The Culture of American Advertising", Jack Solomon studies and analyzes advertisements in order to show that advertisers and big companies make use of what they know about the society and culture in order to manipulate us into buying a new product or using a service. According to the text, while we may believe in equality and equal chance, we also find that we desire "rising above the crowd", in which we compete for "privilege and distinction". This is where the American paradox lies. Furthermore in the article, "The contradiction is between the simultaneous desire for social superiority (elitism) and social equality (populism) that lies at the heart of the American Dream". Simply put: the American
Again, Vonnegut's main character is composed of two complementary sides; one good, and one evil; together forming the whole person. We must view Billy, however, as essentially good in order to see Vonnegut's point; that government with this type of moral stronghold on society is essentially bad and will force good men to perform evil acts in the name of freedom. This theme is carried into another story from Welcome to the Monkey House, entitled "Harrison Bergeron." This story, only seven pages long, was expanded into a movie because of the interesting questions it raises. "Harrison Bergeron" is the story of a futuristic world in which everyone is equal.
Huxley also predicts that complete power over citizens would be the normal way of life and accomplished by pre-conditioning all citizens to act/behave the same way, and believe in the same things. Just like an army of clones, the power that the World State has over its citizens has to do mainly with control of their mind and their thoughts. In the book, the Director feels that people should know very little about the “truth” and erase any conception they have of freedom or making choices. Everyone will be conditioned the same
In fact, in August of 2011, DHS had a threat assessment released that claims that most of the Anonymous group is nothing more than “script kiddies” (Nguyen, 2011). Script kiddies are hackers that use tools that have been written by other, wiser hackers, and simplify for the uneducated the means to hack a website (among other things). Script kiddie is a rather demeaning term in the hacking world. Maybe DHS poked them with a stick here. Website
