“The Male Myth” Why do men object to feminism? Paul Theroux gives his answer to this question in his article “The Male Myth.” He believed American manhood was pathetic and disgraceful. This was because he thought men were forced into becoming people they did not want to become. To discover the Theroux’s answer it is essential to pay close attention to the sarcasm flowing through the article. Through specific examples, Theroux exploits sexism males face. The article described how young boys are shaped into certain characters to fit in as men. He thought boys were taught to act insensitive and cowardly to all those they met. This is why young boys run around and do not listen to elders. He also claimed boys were forced to enjoy and participate in sports and that high school sports was credited for making boys feel like social misfits, louts and sadist. Also, the article disapproves of men being writers. He said that men must prove power and masculinity and writing does not do that. In addition to money, Theroux thought all male authors were heaving drinkers. He thought alcohol showed wealth and power. All in all, Theroux described most men believe they have lead very difficult lives. The purpose of exploiting the difficulties men face was to show that men feel they are discriminated against just like women. Theroux’s article was clear and to the point, but it must be read carefully to understand the sarcasm added. The sarcasm strengthens the article. At first, the article seemed like Theroux was complaining that men have life harder than women, but with further understanding it proves that men sympathise with women. Most men are afraid to admit why they object to feminism, but Theroux said it was because men are insecure and fear women.
