There are many links between the play Macbeth and the poems Valentine and a Passionate Shepard to his lover. In Macbeth the relationship starts off strong and powerful and as the relationship develops over time it seems to weaken and become barely a relationship. This also happens in a Passionate Shepard, the shepard seems really confident at the start of the poem, then when the poem unfolds the shepard seems less confident in the relationship and starts to weaken he almost becomes desperate. The story line in Macbeth is Macbeth being manipulated, bribed and persuaded into doing something he doesn’t want to do, he’s been manipulated so much he starts to believe that it’s the right thing to do and finally goes through with it. This also happens in the Passionate Shepard, the Shepard is trying to persuade the girl to fall in love with him he’s also trying to bribe her with materialistic items. The characters in Macbeth is a man and a woman, that are a couple but through the duration of the play we find out that there in fake love the lady Macbeth is only pretending to be in love with Macbeth so she can get what she wants. This also occurs in the Passionate Shepard because the woman is not actually in love with the Shepard. The keys theme in Macbeth is love, the key themes in the poems Valentine and the Passionate Shepard is also love. In Macbeth, Macbeth is in love with Lady Macbeth but she only pretends to love him back. Then in Valentine the man the woman are both in love with each other. Finally in the poem the Passionate Shepard, the Shepard is in love with the girl but the girl doesn’t give any indication that she loves him back. The mood and tone in Macbeth is persuasive and desperate because Lady Macbeth persuades Macbeth to do something that he didn’t want to do.
